Memories of the Past

When I was just a little girl
In my room I would sit.
Trying not to shed a tear
While my mom got hit.

My sister held me close to her,
And said not to fear.
But when I looked into her eyes, I knew,
Here comes a tear.

We prayed together that everything would change,
But every time we turned around, things remained the same.

Everytime my dad would swing,
We'd hear it down the hall.
Two little girls scared to death
That he'd hurt mommy's jaw.

Mommy couldn't stand the pain,
She wanted to take her life.
She told the Lord that she couldn't live
Through another night.

With tears running down her cheek,
She put a gun to her chin.
She said, "Please, God, change my mind,
And this girl will never be the same again."

The television set was on.
The channels would only flicker.
She waited for an answer,
Then started to pull the trigger.

All the sudden the channel cleared,
And she turned her face.
Her favorite song was playing.
It was "Amazing Grace".

Well, now they are divorced,
And it's such a relief.
From now on out,
Us three girls can start a new family.
