Dear John, it's near 50 years since we last commnicated, and that was while we were students at Iona College. Hope to see you at our 50th Reunion this June if your schedule permits.
On another note, I witnessed a very disturbing Union activity on January 7, 2005 at the Sullivan County Government Center. There was a rally to support the building of casinos in Sullivan County and many Union Members were present to make their wishes known. Unfortunately, the applicants for the casinos provided the Union Members with placards and buttons from a NON-UNION SHOP. The opposing casino group had its placards with the appropriate Union Label clearly displayed. I, as a founding member of the UFT (United Federation of Teachers) Local 1, and also a Member of the CSA (Council of Supervisors and Administrators) Local 1, was appalled at this "using of Union Membership" displaying NON-Union material in a governmental center. I brought this to the attention of several of the tradesmen - carpenters, iron workers, and laborers, and pointed out this embarrassing situation. Most were not aware of what they were carrying and this is probably an educational issue for the Locals involved in this demonstration. I think that the concept of Unionism and Brotherhood was trashed at the expense of the Typographical Union and Allied Trades. As President of the AFL/CIO and as my former schoolmate, I felt you should know of this indiscretion. Perhaps somebody who is in charge of this operation should be notified, and some penalty and apology be made to the Typographical Unions in the Sullivan County area.
