ID #183-188
183) Chicago Boys: The name given to Pinochet's economic team because several of its members were trained at the University of Chicago. They applied free-market economic policies, such as privitization and deregulation. Though they are praised for forming an expanded (growth of non-traditional exports) free-market economy, their success failed to translate into a higher standard of living, and instead decreased income levels while increasing unemployment. In general, their policies made the economy during the Pinochet regime extremely unstable.

184) National Stadium (Chile): A sports complex in Santiago After the coup which brought Pinochet to power, it became a site for detention and execution of prisoners. It serves as an example of massive human rights abuses committed under the military regime against Chileans and foreigners, most of whom were not political opponents.

185) Dawson Island: Off the coast of Southern Chile, it was the site of a camp where about 30 government officials from Allende's government as well as 200 people from the area were imprisoned after the military coup. The prisoners were forced to do manual labor under harsh and degrading conditions. It's another example of human rights abuses committed under the Pinochet regime.

186) Concertacion (Chile): A coalition of Christian Democrats, socialists, radicals and the PPD (among other groups) and led by Christian Democratic president Patricio Aylwin who won in the election of 1989. The coalition set out on a program of seeking democratization and social reform, while maintaining economic growth. However, they were hindered by authoritarian enclaves from the Pinochet regime, such as designated seats in the Senate.

187) The "two Chiles": Refers to the Chile represented by the poor and oppressed class and the Chile of the middle and upper class. The latter lived well under Pinochet's rule, while the former generally did not benefit from Pinochet's economic reforms and were often the target of human rights abuses. One Chile supported him while the other did not. Even today, there exists "two Chiles" in the debate over whether or not he should be prosecuted.

188) Nunca mas/nunca mais: "Nunca Mas" (Never Again) is the title of a book (published 1984) which included a report by the Sabato commission (appointed by President Alfonsin after the democratic transition in Argentina) on extensive testimony and findings regarding human rights abuses committed under authoritarian rule. "Nunca Mais" (Never Again) is a similar report by the Archdioscese of Sao Paulo. Both represent steps taken by the new institutionally democratic governments to consolidate their democracy and prevent future atrocities by bringing the truth to light.
