113) Patricio Alwyn ? Elected president of Chile in 1989 for the Christian Democratic Party. He succeeded in setting the country on a solid course of redemocratization, while presiding over notable economic progress. Helped establish the largest and most constructive and enduring multiparty alliance in the nation?s history, the Concertacion de Partidos por La Democracia. Alwyn struggled to maintain economic growth while improving social conditions, confront issues of human rights, and seek further democratization. With all the reforms, Alwyn was unable to revoke the provisions of the 1980 constitution that prohibited him from retiring army officers.
114) Eduardo Frei Sr. ? From 1964 to 1970 Christian Democrat Eduardo Frei led a center-left ?revolution in liberty? that began an agrarian reform and the nationalization of the U.S.-owned copper mines. It also promoted grassroots organization but raised popular expectations that it could not fulfill. In response, Chileans voted narrowly in 1970 for Socialist Salvador?s Allende?s ?democratic road to socialism,? a program of even more radical reform that promsed to extend what Frei had started and prepare the way for a future transition to democratic socialism.
115) Eduardo Frei Jr. ? Son of former president. Frei defeated Ricardo Lagos in a primary contest. He gained 58.1 percent of the vote, highest percentage gained by a candidate since 1920s. Frei administration followed broad policy outlines of its predecessor, while seeking to strengthen the country?s public-works infrastructure and educational systems. Chile continued to maintain high growth spurred by record levels of direct foreign investment, while inflation levels declined even further as the country maintained a positive macroeconomic balance sheet. Important reforms were adopted, but the opposition majority in the Senate barred any significant constitutional changes. Frei?s job approval fell considerably when issues of crime, health care, poverty, education and drugs were brought up.
116) Ricardo Lagos ? Recently elected Chilean president who 14 years ago gave a bold televised criticism of General Pinochet while he was still in power. He criticized the general for his violation of human rights and showed contempt for the General?s desire to rule Chile for 25 years. Having originally served the government of Salvador Allende, he became a long-time dissident of the military regime. In the 1980s he headed a coalition of all parties that opposed the Pinochet regime and in 1986 he was arrested and detained without charge for three weeks following an assassination attempt on General Pinochet. In 1987 he formed the Party for Democracy (PPD) which is now part of the ruling Concertacion alliance. He was the first socialist president since Salvador Allende was overthrown by General Pinochet.
117) The House of the Spirits ? A novel written by Isabelle Allende and published in 1994. It begins in an unnamed South American country with a woman known as Clara del Valle. She is struck mute by the events surrounding the death of her sister and only speaks again to announce her marriage. Her husband is Esteban Trueba, originally a fiancée to Clara?s sister, Rosa. They move to an estate where Esteban builds a magnificent house for her and eventually his family. Their children are Blanca and the twins, Jaime and Nicolas. Blanca eventually becomes romantically involved with the son of the foreman and has a daughter, Alba. Political loyalties and revolution tear the family apart as the government is overthrown by a military coup and Esteban loses much of his acquired wealth and power.
118) Esteban Trueba ? One of the principle characters of Allende?s ?House of the Spirits.? He marries the younger sister of his original fiancée and builds an estate in a desolated part of the country. He rules the estate with an iron fist and alienates all around him with his incredible fury. He beats his wife, Clara and banishes his sister for growing too close with his wife. He has a daughter, Blanca, who falls in love with the foreman?s son, much to Esteban?s disgust. He eventually runs for senator as a conservative and accumulates power. His family is shattered as he continually pushes them all away and when his bastard son returns to torture his family.
119) Pedro Tercero Garcia ? Son of the the foreman in ?House of the Spirits.? He is a student rebel who falls in love with Blanca. She hides him when the police are looking for him and becomes very active in his political goals. He becomes a hero among the workers on Esteban?s estate and gains in popularity with the revolutionists because of his songs on his guitar. Esteban tries to kill Pedro but stops himself at the last minute, cutting off several of Pedro?s fingers. Pedro eventually leaves Blanca because he does not want her involved in his dangerous life.
