Mother

The echo
Of my mother's buzzing vacuum motor
Reverberates down through the air
From the balcony down to my ears
On the sanctuary floor below.
Remember, dust everything.

I push through the shadows of the apex
Where spirits congregate.
I feel them permeate my bones, laughing into my eyes, into
The illuminated open air of the sanctuary.
Moonlight streams in through
Endless stained panes of glass falling
Down on me from all sides. And

I clutch my dust rag which,
Had it been wet,
Would have been bone-dry by now.
Smooth it over the shoulders of pews.
Methodically pass the cloth over them.
Again and again.
The dust always manages to collect again.
