Date Posted: October 26, 2002 7:30:00 EDT Ed Rossbach, a pioneer in the fiber-arts movement, died here on Oct. 7. He was 88 and lived in Berkeley. Mr. Rossbach experimented with nontraditional textile materials in artworks and often used foil, plastic bags, Mylar, twigs, staples and twine in his pieces. He was born in Edison Park, Ill., earned a bachelor's degree in painting and design from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1940 and received a master's degree in art education from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1941. Mr. Rossbach's works are in many museum collections, including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He also wrote several books, including "The Nature of Basketry" and "Baskets as Textile Art." Mr. Rossbach is survived by his wife, Katherine Westphal, also a fiber artist.
