Bob Allen, an all-conference player at Kansas in the early 1940s and the son of coach Phog Allen, died Thursday. He was 83.

Allen was a three-time letterman for the Jayhawks and a two-time All-Big Six Conference selection, in 1940 and 1941.

Playing center, Allen scored a team-high 13 points in the championship game of the 1940 NCAA tournament, which Kansas lost to Indiana 60-42. He was named to the all-tournament team, and still has the distinction of being the only player to lead his team in scoring in an NCAA title game while playing for his father.

Word of Allen's death came Sunday, as Kansas prepared to play Syracuse in the national championship game on Monday night.

Phog Allen won 746 games as a coach, 10th-most in NCAA Division I history, and led the Jayhawks to the 1952 national title.

One of Bob Allen's teammates was Ralph Miller, who went on to become a Hall of Fame coach in his own right, winning 657 games at Wichita State, Iowa and Oregon State.

After college, Bob Allen became a doctor at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, where he also became chairman of the department of surgery and president of the surgical staff.
