Eddy Marnay, an Algerian-born songwriter whose work brought fame to singers like Édith Piaf and Celine Dion, died on Friday in Paris. He was 82.

Mr. Marnay wrote more than 100 songs, working with such performers as Dalida, an Egyptian-born singer and actress; Claude François, a French singer; Nana Mouskouri, a Greek singer; and Barbra Streisand.

Born in Algiers, Mr. Marnay moved to Paris in 1937, where he became a scriptwriter and then a songwriter.

In 1948 he and a small group of musicians wrote "Lovers of Paris" ("Les Amants de Paris"), which became a hit for Piaf. The lyrics were by Mr. Marnay.

Later he contributed to many enduring French tunes. He also composed the title song for Charlie Chaplin's 1957 movie "A King in New York."

He wrote for Ms. Dion when she was a teenager and an up-and-comer in Quebec in the early 1980's, and most of her French-language hits are by him.

His songs, including "La Voix du Bon Dieu," helped earn Ms. Dion a contract with CBS Records Canada.
