Two men wanted for questioning in the slaying of a Broward County sheriff's deputy were found dead Thursday, both shot in the head in what authorities said was a murder-suicide.

The men were identified as Kevin Chermark, 25, and Christopher Brad Spicer, 24, Palm Beach County sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller said. Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne said new evidence showed it was Chermark and Spicer who killed Deputy Philip Billings, 25, on Sunday while he was working an off-duty security detail at a Pompano Beach car dealership.

"I know we have our men," Jenne said. He had announced Wednesday that detectives were seeking the two for questioning, but had refused to call them suspects in the slaying.

Deputies found the pair in a running sport utility vehicle on Thursday morning. They found a handgun in Chermark's lap and a flexible hose running from the exhaust pipe into the passenger-side window, according to a police report.

Evidence showed Chermark shot Spicer once in the right side of the head, then shot himself under the chin, officials said.

"It appears that both apparently had planned to commit suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning but at some point it turned to a murder-suicide," the report said.

Jenne said the pair had gone to the car dealership to steal the wheels off a Cadillac Escalade. They were seen on surveillance video buying beer at a gas station 23 minutes before Billings was shot, he said.

Detectives had questioned Chermark and Spicer on Monday but released them because there wasn't enough evidence to hold them, Jenne said. He said new information collected since then had led to the manhunt that turned up the bodies.
