Police were searching Thursday for a man who shot a pregnant woman on a subway train, killing the baby and leaving her critically wounded.

The 29-year-old woman, who was 8 1/2 months pregnant, was shot late Wednesday after a group of youths began arguing on the train. The group fled after the shooting, and police said the victim was apparently not the target.

The woman, who was not identified, was upgraded to serious condition Thursday after surgery at Boston Medical Center, police Deputy Superintendent Paul Farrahar said.

The baby was born at the hospital, but later died, Farrahar said.

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said the shooting was murder under state law because the baby was born alive.
