I do understand your dilemma ... it is nice to be able to tie in our lessons with the holidays when we can and it's also nice NOT to have to start mid-unit. I'm still not sure what is best for your family, but I did have one thought.

Unit 2 begins with Lesson 7 and you said you could start with Lesson 9 or 10 to be at Lesson 14 for the Thanksgiving week. Both Lessons 7 & 8 are about Columbus ... could you possibly mesh those weeks into *ONE* week? It might mean leaving a few things out, but that is often done with unit studies. I personally find there are more activities in Unit Studies than I end up doing with my children anyway and PPrimers only has 3 History days each unit, so combining 2 units gives 6 days of History which can easily be condensed into 5 days. If you combine those 2 weeks, you could start at the BEGINNING of Unit 2 and not mid-unit. The next week, you would combine Units 9 & 10 into one week. The Science in Units 9 & 10 mesh easily, too, as they both are about eclipses. If you combine units, I truly don't think you are doing an injustice to the study of the various explorers - your kids will be studying them again in the future anyway as most Am. Hist. curriculums teach Exploration. I also find that if I leave books about our current History study on the living room table, my kids pick them up and read through them on their own. So leave some explorer books lying around for them to read or make it a part of an extra afternoon or evening reading session if you feel that combining 9 & 10 covers the explorers a bit more lightly than you would like.

Combining Units will enable you to start at the beginning of Unit 2 and work your way into Unit 3 for Thanksgiving! Just a thought ...
