Liann,
Because I direct our church's children's choir and usually help with the adult Christmas program and host several Christmas parties at our house, I like to take the month of December off so that we can just play. So what I do is go backwards from Thanksgiving and begin school so that we end first semester at Thanksgiving. Actually, though, this year I'm so anxious to get back to school that we may start a little earlier. We do school pretty much straight through from August through November, not taking any of the school holidays, but sometimes taking off for things that come up that we want to do. Then we start back right after Christmas and finish up the second semester. I like to finish the year kind of early so that we can spend the wonderful spring time outdoors as much as possible. It doesn't really work for us to take off whole weeks during the school year because it just seems like it's harder to get back into the routine again. For me, it's easiest to go straight through with two big breaks in the middle.
