Subject: Ya'll are not going to believe what was in our house!

I walked past my kitchen tonight and movement caught my eye. I looked again and there was something flying around my kitchen. I started screaming and Brittany came flying out of the bathtub while it took a little bit before my husband deciphered my hysterics to figure out what I was saying. We all stared in amazement at this bird or bat that was flying around. At first we assumed it was a bird, but the more we looked, the more we were convinced it was a bat. All he did was fly around in circles through the kitchen then swoop to the dining room or breakfast nook then back to the kitchen. We have a very open floor plan but we closed every door we could then Fred sent me outside to see if I could find a net to catch him in.
While I was out looking around in the dark, our elderly next door neighbor (who's hard of hearing) came out. I asked if he had a net.
"I saw the cat earlier today."
"No, a net. Do you have a net. We have a bird or bat flying around our house."
"Must be a bird. What color is it?"
"Solid black."
"Where does he land?"
"He doesn't."
"Hum, must be a bat. I once had a humingbird in our house..."
I finally made it back in and my husband was still trying to swat him in the direction of the back door, but to no avail. Brittany and I finally went over to the stairwell out of the way and next thing we knew, he swooped past us. He must have passed Brittany because at the same time I realized he had flown past, Brittany was slamming the upstairs bedroom door. We told her to stay closed in and the bat (yes, he was definitely a bat) lighted up on the air conditioning vent.
Fred carefully caught him in a giant tin and took him outside and he happily flew away.
I know that if I were a good unschool mom, this would have been a great science lesson. But being the girly girl that I am, I just wanted to get rid of the thing. I did do some research afterwards, though, and discovered that he wasn't a flying fox or vampire bat, so he was probably harmless unless he had rabies. All in all, I don't think anyone in our family is interested in any more studies of bats.

Happy Homeschooling!
Sharon
