Subject: If you don't already own Big Book of Books

I just got this book by Dinah Zikes and I wish I'd gotten it a lot earlier. It is all creative ways to present information you've learned. It ties in so perfectly with Patchworks.

We don't normally school in the summer, but this year I wanted to fit in Florida history during the summer rather than doing it during the school year. I got this book this weekend and it inspired me to have Florida camp this week. It's not just the ideas in it, but they inspire many more ideas. We read about history each day, then did a hands on project to go along with the information. On Monday we did a general introduction and I told Brittany to choose something to make to store our projects for the rest of the week. I was thinking a folder or box covered with pictures of Florida. She decided to make a box house with log walls and palmetto roof like one we'd read about in our book. Tuesday we studied explorers and she made a matchbook report about Ponce de Leon (matchbooks are taught in the BBOB). Wednesday we studied pirates and made a pirate ship and island with treasure. Today we studied Florida during the Civil War and made a patchword square with the different flags that have flown over Florida (patchword squares are another BBOB idea). Tomorrow we're studying Florida today and will make a pocket book of attractions.

Granted, this has just been a breeze through and we'll go back and study Florida history in more depth when she's a little older, but this has been such a fun introduction and a great week.

I can't wait to see how many of the ideas will tie in perfectly with volume 2. I can't wait to get to work on it. I wish we could start next week, but with VBS and vacation coming up, we'll have to wait. But I can still be planning and getting excited.

Happy Homeschooling!
Sharon
