Since I am currently using Vol. 1 as a spine for our school year, I have to say that I really like it and I wouldn't worry about tweaking it until you have time! It really is good the way it is. I agree with you that adding information about the Zike books would be useful as we are really enjoying making up our lapbooks, but it isn't needed to make the study better.

I truly feel that it is subjective as to what subjects *need* to be covered. My kids really enjoy studying about animals, so we are keeping this study going even while we are studying about Astronomy in Unit 2. This is why almost any curriculum a parent chooses will NOT be the "perfect" curriculum for their children. Children have so many interests (and dislikes!) that it is very difficult to please everyone. If I didn't belong to an umbrella school that tests every year, I wouldn't even be worrying about what to cover! I'd just let my children choose what subject to cover in a years time ... but, alas, those standardized tests *are* based on the average scope and sequence of the *PUBLIC* schools, so I'm sorta forced into what to teach each year. I like that you covered Am. History in *ONE* year in Vol. 1 ... it's truly up to the parent as to how deeply they wish to study each unit.

Sharon, I think you do very well covering the basics! While, we don't do everything you have listed in the book, there is a lot to choose from and I like that! You just take your time working on Vol. 3 - I'm sure you'll be very happy with it when you are finished. Several months ago, I decided to go ahead and put together my own study. It will be on World Cultures, which is probably a bit different from your "countries of the world" study. I have sooooo many great World Cultures/Geography books in my home and I've learned a lot by owning your first 2 volumes and that gave me enough confidence to put together my own study using the books I already own!! Now, my study will NOT be a unit study because we already have our own math and grammar, so your Vol. 3 will definitely be more thorough. I asked my kids for input and my daughter wanted to study animals and where they originate geographically (she wants to be a vet!) and my son wanted to study trains around the world (he wants to be a train engineer). I've been able to work both of these topics into my study because I already owned some good books on both topics. We will use Patchwork Primers, Vol. 2 for our Science and Fine Art study at the same time and I know I can work some of it into the Cultures study. I think it will be our best year yet!

Kris
