GODDESS OF MERCY
An Xin is a drug enforcement officer in the small border town of Nande in Yunan Province. She is engaged to the journalist Tiejun, but is hesitant to marry him. To add to her uncertainty, she meets a very charming young man, Mao Jie. It is almost love at first sight. Their relationship progresses quickly from being complete strangers to being passionately in love. But An Xin is once again hesitant; she knows Mao Jie loves her deeply but she isn`t quite sure of the depth of his attraction to her. Her discovery that she is pregnant (apparently by Tiejun) decides the matter: An Xin is a police officer and for reasons of principle and discipline she feels she has no choice but to break things off with Mao Jie. She thinks it best that she and Tiejun get married immediately. Not long after her marriage, An Xin becomes involved in a risky undercover operation. When she discovers who is at the other end of the drug transaction, she is forced into making a life-changing decision.


Ann Hui
Born in Anshan (Liaoning province), China in 1947, Ann Hui received her master`s in English literature from the University of Hong Kong in 1972 before studying cinema at the London Film School. Returning to Hong Kong in 1975, she began working as a director in television dramatic series. She made her debut in feature films in 1979 with THE SECRET. Among her subsequent films: SPOOKY BUNCH (1980), STORY OF WOO VIET (1981), BOAT PEOPLE (1983, selected for Cannes and winner of best film and best director at the Hong Kong Film Awards), LOVE IN A FALLEN CITY (1984), SONG OF THE EXILE (1989), ZODIAC KILLERS (1991), SUMMER SNOW (1995), VISIBLE SECRET (2001), JULY RHAPSODY (2002).
