Chin Chin Gutierrez makes cover of �TIME�

The cover story of the latest TIME magazine salutes its 2003 list of "Asian Heroes: They Made a Difference As They Made Us Proud." The lone Philippine honoree and gracing the cover of TIME Asia is film-and-television actress Chin-Chin Gutierrez.

This year's list of TIME's Asian Heroes features inspirational figures such as the healthcare workers fighting the SARS virus. It also includes artist-entertainers such as conceptual artist Yoko Ono, NBA Star Yao Ming, the internationally-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Filipina actress Chin-Chin Gutierrez. These celebrities were chosen not just for their artistic excellence but for their activism in pursuing the well-being of the greater world outside their professional circles.

TIME cites Chin-Chin for "using her fame to spread a message often ignored in the Philippines: there are natural resources aside from beauty and talent..." The article quotes Chin-Chin saying, "The environment needs our help to preserve its future... There's a proverb: The earth is not given to you by your parents. It is loaned to you by your children."

Asked for her personal reaction on making the cover of TIME, Chin-Chin said, "It's a great honor, of course. And beyond feelings of personal accomplishment, I take it as an affirmation that caring for the natural world is important. It is quite apt because in saving the environment for our children, time is of the essence." Then she quipped, "Wow, I'm in the same issue as Yao Ming!"

Chin-Chin Gutierrez is a multi-awarded actress in stage, film and television. She plays the archvillain Helga Lamermoor in the hugely popular telenovela Habang Kapiling Ka
