Howdy....
I went last year and had a blast. I'm a veteran of hundreds of Phish shows, five Lollapaloozas, and all of the major outdoor Phish concerts (Clifford Ball, Great Went, Lemonwheel, Big Cypress, Oswego, etc.), as well as hundreds of other shows in many different genres. In other words, I've been to a lot of concerts, and I think I have a pretty good appreciation for what makes for a great festival experience.
To answer your questions:
1.) What happens when you get through the traffic jam is you will pull up to a big checkpoint with lots of people checking cars. They just make you pop the truck, look inside, do a quick inventory of your car to see if you're trying to smuggle ticketless people into the show or nitrous tanks or whatever, then they mark your windshield to prove that you've been searched. They give you a little booklet/map with a layout of the whole concert grounds and a Superfly sampler CD (well, they did last year, anyway). Then they look at your ticket and slap a wristband on your arm. Then you follow a line of traffic to whatever campgrounds/parking areas they are currently trying to fill up. Their staff will direct you next to the other cars in a neat little row -- what we did last year was wait until most of the row filled up and then moved our car to a different area. It's a little tricky manuevering among all the people putting their tents up, but you can basically just move your car if you have to. They give you enough space to open your doors on both sides of your car without touching the car next to you, and a few feet behind your car for your tent. If you need more room, you might have to move your car when the staff isn't looking. Nobody seemed really anal about relocating last year, but try not to run anyone over either. The first day of the festival is very chaotic because of all the setting up you have to do, combined with the overwhelming emotion of ACTUALLY BEING AT BONNAROO!!!! Meeting up with friends is a little difficult without a cell phone or a walkie-talkie, but not impossible either. Personally, I wouldn't rely on posting a piece of paper on the big Bonnaroo message boards, because they quickly become so crowded that it's hard to locate anything.
2.) AND YES, THEY LET YOU KEEP YOUR TICKET!!!!
A few pointers that may seem obvious -- Don't try to see everything on every stage (it's impossible, believe me, I tried). Plan your day, including which bands you're going to see, but don't overplan. Let yourself wander around a little bit. Also, drink lots of water (it sure is hot in that Tennessee sun). And bring something to provide shade (this was CRUCIAL last year), because otherwise you will burn to a crisp within the first day. Oh yeah, I also found that a good pair of shoes, sunglasses, a baseball hat, my own toilet paper, trash bags, and some baby-wipes (for hygiene purposes) were a good idea too. And bring lots and lots of water -- way more than you think you'll be able to drink. Water was a precious commodity by the last day of the festival last year and you can always share it (and make LOTS of friends in the process).
Simply put, Bonnaroo was the BEST concert I've ever gone to, both from a logistical standpoint as well as a musical standpoint. Also, the crowd that showed up last year was the best concert audience I've ever seen, period. Good vibes galore and incredible music taboot. Lots of energy. Lots of late-night action. Come to Bonnaroo prepared to stay up really late, because they keep the music pumping til close to 5 or 6 a.m. (and sometimes longer, especially with bands like Particle playing). And there is a whole lot of interaction between various artists, ie, musical guests at just about every show. It is like a big carnival for grown-ups. You've never seen anything like it before. You will be itching to go check out Bonnaroo NE when it's all over, mark my words!
I hope I helped -- sorry for the long posting! I can't stop talking about Bonnaroo either! (: (: (:
Peace,
Bob
