- Amanda Laurin -- ......, 02:49:28 08/27/08 Wed
So it's kind of funny how Amanda's name isn't on this site anymore. She's still kickin! I heard that she's done soo many Double Penetrations with the generals that it's not even like, out of the ordinairy anymore. She's got a long list of general fucks, and doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon, it's not only generals - there's other teams on her kill list now. Would you like a list?

I would keep going....but I dont want to bore you. You might wonder how do I even know all her buisness, but her so called "Friend" from Hamilton hacked into her account and found an e-mail to herself with a list called "Kill List" and unless she physically killed these people, I'd say it's safe to assume she's banged them all..plus more, many many more. It's sad to know, even though she's 19 years old and still hooking up with the boys that are in grade 11 and 12. Kinda pathetic, and it's funny that she has to go back to high school - HENRY, at that - because she still hasn't graduated..maybe she should stay in her classes and not skip out for booty calls in the middle of the day, and unfortunately for the rest of us, we have to see her there everyday. OR! take washroom breaks and give the boys a little something something in the washroom, and then get caught doing it! and also, Amanda, portables are for learning, not giving head behind them to Justin Sawyer, we all saw you so don't pretend it didn't happen. Nicole Smith told the whole school all about it, who also kicked Amanda's ass for talking shit and lying about Nicole having a threesome with Justin & Tyler Donati oh, ...and, Pretty sure....she admitted to catching something from Justin Sawyer or Darryl Flowers, considering she fucked them within 10 minutes of eachother..she apparently didn't even have her pants on from Flowers and she was fucking Sawyer. All her dirty little details were in this e-mail, and I saw it. Needless to say, this girl is fucking grosss!!! No wonder she has no friends, and hasn't grown up from fucking hockey players since she was in grade 9, until now...5 years later...and it's still going strong. It's funny how there was a group of you girls who all did it, Melissa, Steph, Michelle, Noreen....and then now that everyone's grown up, you don't hear shit about them anymore, but Amanda's name has keep just coming up like she will never grow up and move on from the OHL guys. How bad must Amanda feel that she fucked Darryl Flowers when he was in the OHL , and now he's married with a kid...LIKE...how long ago was that??? everyone's told this girl that she's stupid for keep doing it but she still does, and then cuts up other people who talk to them....or even like, hangs out with them. It's also funny that she talks to Tyler Taylor on a regular basis and tells him how she can't wait for him to come back to town and can't wait to hang out , and sends all these NASTY pics of herself to him, and gives some shows on the webcam, enough guys have pictures of her nasty body on their cell phones and computers, it's distusting. Better hope it doesn't go around again like last year, cause that shit was gross to see all around Henry. Hey and Amanda, done any ass to mouth lately? Cause I heard you LOVE it...HOW'S THE DUNGEON? i've heard sooo much shit about your ratty ass basement in the past week even, it's retarded shit. People actually call this girl's basement, "The Dungeon" cause there's literally just a matteress on the middle of the floor and nothing's on it, just a matteress...imagine how many unborn children are on that matteress?!...My friend even heard from his friend about this girl's house and they live in London...!!!! that's wayy too fucked. they called it "This Dirties House"..and "Big Red's Dungeon of Doom" .....HOW SAD!!! After writing all this, I kind of feel bad, because Amanda Laurin has NO life, NO friends, and NOTHING going for her..she really has nothing better to do than sit at home, make fake e-mail accounts and fuck with people's heads saying that she's a different person and make them like this fake girl, that really turns out to be AMANDA LAURIN. *WARNING* - - Amanda DOES NOT have any female or male cousins with blonde hair and blue eyes. Look at her!!!, she can't be related to someone that's outstandingly pretty at all. it's the same genes.....so if you get a random add from some pretty girl or guy claiming to be amanda's cousin or KNOWING amanda at all, think twice! she's done this shit to ALL the generals, past & present, and her "friend's" guy friends. She's been beat up too many times to count by too many people, and she just will never learn her lesson. It's kinda sad....that people like her are alive. If anyone else has any info on AMANDA LAURIN, feel free to let us all in on more of her dirty secrets!!

- MAKE MONEY FAST AND EASY -- BRIAN, 17:35:28 09/25/08 Thu
Date Posted: 16:41:39 09/05/08 Fri
Author: Caleb Lea
Subject: MAKe MOney Fast
Make Money Fast and Easy!!!!!!
Just by following these simple steps:
*MAKE EASY AND QUICK CASH MONEY by doing almost nothing (NO JOKE, NO SCAM, AND VERY LEGAL)
Please read on! You will be very thankful you did! *PLEASE READ LIFE CHANGING INFORMATION!!
*$6.00 to 42,000!! THIS IS AN EASY, HONEST, AND LEGAL WAY TO MAKE SOME QUICK CASH! WOW THIS
REALLY WORKED! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!! YOU WON'T EITHER! A while back, I was browsing these
newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you
could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00 plus
stamps! So I thought, "Yeah, right, this must be a scam!" But like most of us I was curious
and kept reading. It said that if you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and addresses listed
in the article, you could make thousands in a very short period of time! You then place your
own name and address at the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article to at least 200
newsgroups. (There are about 32,000 of them out there and that's quite a large market pool).
No catch, that was it. Even though the investment was a measly $6, I had three questions
that needed to be answered before I could get involved in this sort of thing.
1. IS THIS REALLY LEGAL?? I called a lawyer first. The lawyer was a little skeptical that I
would actually make any money but he said it WAS LEGAL if I wanted to try it. I told him it
sounded a lot like a chain letter but the details of the system (SEE BELOW) actually made it
a legitimate legal bOR IS IT MAIL FRAUD?.... I called them: 1-800-725-2161 and they
confirmed THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! (See Title18, h sections1302 NS 1341 of Postal Lottery
Laws). This clarifies the program of business.
2. IS IT OK WITH THE POST OFFICE collecting names and addresses for a mailing list. Well of
course
3. IS IT MORAL? Well, everyone who sends me a buck has a good chance of getting A LOT of
money ... a much better chance than buying a lottery ticket!!! So, having these questions
answered, I invested EXACTLY $8.04 ... six $1.00 bills and six 34 cent postage stamps ...
and boy am I glad I did!!! Within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was
shocked! I figured it would end soon and didn't give it another thought. But the money
continued coming in. In my first week I made between $20 to $30. By the end of the second
week I had a made a total of $1,000.00. In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it was
still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000 and
it's still coming in ..... It's certainly worth $6.00 and 6 stamps!!! Also, make sure you
print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I
promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money
than you thought possible by doing something so easy! Suggestion: Read this entire message
carefully! (Print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money
come in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage) IMPORTANT:
This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk -
it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive
extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or
more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty
and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the
instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your
product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the business of developing
Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists.
However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from
people like you and me asking to be included in that list.
HERE ARE 4 EASY STEPS TO SUCCESS:
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper
"PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST."Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of
the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent
thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now
have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and
address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY
LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us I
was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked
it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed
legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:
#1) James Gierhart 855 o st., penrose,CO 81240
#2) Tiffany Cates,6903 Border Brook Apt # 1106,San Antonio,TX 78238
#3) N King 222 Windig Hollow Coppell,TX 75019
#4) Paul Lanham, 56 Defew Ave., Rineyville,KY 40162
#5) Caleb Lea, ULM Box 4038,Monroe,LA 71212
#6) Brian Smith, P.O. Box 5,Mokelumne Hill,CA 95245
Note:
MAILING THE MONEY IS A VERY CRITICAL STEP IN THIS WHOLE PROCESS. IF PEOPLE DID NOT MAIL THE
MONEY, THIS WHOLE THING WOULD NOT WORK. $6 IS NOT WORTH MESSING THIS SYSTEM UP, AND IT ONLY
TAKES ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME. DO THIS AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED. I AM LIVING PROOF!!
STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6
becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list.
STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as
possible.
STEP 4: Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close
to 32,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you
make! This is perfectly legal! Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you
need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains
successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully
adhering to every step in the directions. Look at it this way. If you are a person of
integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will
come your way.
NOTE:
You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy
and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service.
(Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail
theft.) So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members
will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your
name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you
will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00
for each of the first six people listed above) Send it now, add your own name to the list
and you're in business!
HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS --- DIRECTIONS ---
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put
your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this
document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the
computer's memory.
Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From
the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that
you can add your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in
different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line
forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting
the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this
will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a
particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one!
Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post
away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO
POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world
within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O. Box due to the large amount of mail you
will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the
postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT** Now the WHY part:
Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00
with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the
MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the
original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my
name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125
persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies
each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625
persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies,
that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200
newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive
$15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer
on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00
to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The
thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining
the internet and reading these articles everyday? JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford
$6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is
played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening
when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet
and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000
new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember, play
FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work. ] ** By the way, if you try to deceive people
by posting the messages with your name in the list and not sending the money to the rest of
the people already on the list, you will NOT get as much. Someone I talked to knew someone
who did that and he only made about $150.00, and that's after seven or eight weeks! Then he
sent the 6 $1.00 bills, people added him to their lists, and in 4-5 weeks he had over $10k.
This is the fairest and most honest way I have ever seen to share the wealth of the world
without costing anything but our time!!! You also may want to buy mailing and e-mail lists
for future dollars. Make sure you print this article out RIGHT NOW! Also, try to keep a list
of everyone that sends you money and always keep an eye on the newsgroups to make sure
everyone is playing fairly. Remember, HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY. You don't need to cheat
the basic idea to make the money!! GOOD LUCK to all and please play fairly and reap the huge
rewards from this, which is tons of extra CASH. Please remember to declare your extra
income. Thanks once again... LEGAL? ? ? (Comments from Bob Novak who started this new
version.) "People have asked me if this is really legal. Well, it is! You are using the
Internet to advertise your business. What is that business? You are assembling a mailing
list of people who are interested in home-based computer and online business and methods of
generating income at home. Remember, people send you a small fee to be added to your mailing
list. It is legal. What will you do with your list of thousands of names? That's up to you."
So, build your mailing list, keep good accounts, declare the income and pay your taxes. By
doing this you prove your business intentions. Keep an eye on the newsgroups and when the
cash has stopped coming (that means your name is no longer on the list), you just take the
latest posting at the newsgroups, send another $6.00 to the names stated on the list, make
your corrections (put your name at #6) and start posting again.
NOTES:
* 1. In some countries, the export of the country's exchange is illegal. But you can get the
license to do this from the post office, explaining the above statements (that you have an
online business, etc. You may have to pay an extra tax, but that's OK, the amount of the
incoming money is HUGE! And as I said, a few countries have that restriction.
*2. You may want to buy mailing and e-mail lists for future dollars. (Or Database or
Spreadsheet software.)
*3. If you're really not sure or still think this can't be for real, please print a copy of
this article and pass it along to someone who really needs the money, and see what happens.
*4. You will start getting responses within 1-2 weeks, it depends.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish you girls would stop writting about girls on this site, the guys and everything. These destory people. They wreck perfectly good relationships, in which alot of jealous girls start. - Move on- memo to all Generals, Puck Bunnies, wanna be Puck Bunnies, Volunteers/Employees, etc etc. -- Rilee Mae, 21:54:12 07/30/07 Mon
I came on here after being told there was stuff written that I, for a fact, know is untrue and I laughed my ass off. Are people really that unentertained with their own lives that they have to go on a website and trash any girl they can possibly think of? Who cares if Sara W had sex with the whole team, or the 'volunteers/employees' are 'sluts'? Why do YOU in particular care? How does it pertain to YOU? It's funny because I'm assuming that 90% of the people on this site are either girls who only WISH they could have sex with the Generals, or the Generals themsevles thinking they are all cool because they insult girls that they manipulated and disregarded like trash. Just remember this little boys; you will not all make it to the 'show' and for those of you who don't, good luck pumping gas, I'll be sure to rip my lexus up and ask for premium gas, maybe even throw a little tip your way. You think your such hot shit for treating girls badly, in ten years...the type of girls you USED to get when you used your "Im a hockey player" line, will have moved on and found a man, not a boy, a MAN, one whom doesn't need to use such pathetic lines and moves as you sometime do. You will not get a chance with these girls ever again. Good luck with the fat pigs you date afterwards...remember...its what's inside that counts. For those of you players that have any morals, values or anything even remotely close to that, congradulations...you are one hundred steps further ahead in life than your linemate who still calls girls broads and fucks anything that walks. Character is which we live life by, for those who don't...my heart goes out to you, it really does. Now for the ladies who come on here and for some reason use this site as a way to exercise their self hate; move on. No one knows who you are, so really..when you think you're all tough for trashing these girls..you're not. Deep down, they know the mistakes they have made and will continue to, you don't need to remind them. They have hearts and feelings just as you do, or well...as I would like to think you do, however...in saying so, some of the things said on this site suggests that a few people on here...really don't have any compassion at all. A girl slept with a General...get over it,move on, sleep with one yourself, tell her to her face what you think, but by all means...don't do it this way. And you know, girls always talk about girl power and 'chicks before dicks' when in actuality..its the complete opposite. If girls stopped calling other girls sluts maybe, possibly, the guys would too. (Probably not the Generals...their vocabularies aren't that extensive, sorry fellas.) And to the comments made about volunteers/employees. I know plenty of them, I work there myself. The girls who volunteer are the nicest, sweetest girls ever; they are getting volunteer hours for school because they are in a sports business class. The girls who work there are just trying to make some cash, just like you and me. There is nothing demeaning or status lowering about working for an organization such as the Oshawa Generals. I would like to say I am proud to work there, but with 'fans' like this, it makes me feel that my work is diminished by the fact that I am a female working in a so-called 'mans job'. I will not entail my history with any Generals, for I feel that no matter what I say, I'm sure the first response to this will be 'slut','whore','puck bunny'...but bring it on. I won't lie either and say I have never been screwed over by a General; but I imagine my story of deceit lays much stronger than most girls on here. So call me whatever you would like, I got something more out of my bad situation than most ever will, and although I have been hurt; I don't live in regret, I don't scrutinize other girls and I forgive him. It's not the first time I have been called a puck bunny and I imagine it won't be the last. I do not care. I have enough respect in myself to not have to care about others putting me down. But also remember this ladies and gents; what the Generals tell you happened with a girl, may not always be the truth. They have a tendency to portray the lie instead of the truth. As one General once told me "I thought it was what I was suppose to do. Be a hockey player."(This was pertaining to the way he treated women.) So I'm not going to visit this site ever again, because..besides this little rant, I found it severly uninteresting and pretty pathetic. So ladies, stay strong or move on. And guys...well, there is no advice your ever going to listen to, so good luck throughout the season and I hope you find a little respect for yourselves and others along the way.
Cheers.

First off we can dismiss off hand a large segment of this list. Even if we include longshots, the list of candidates who even have a remote chance of entering the Hall on Toronto would look like this;

Still we need to cut this list down drastically but at least our next round of cuts deserves an explanation;
Damphousse - He scored exactly 40 goals once and never reached 100 points in a season. Overall he only had 5 seasons in which he was truly an upper level player. Compared to his peers he is well short.
Claude Lemieux - Legendary playoff exploits aren’t enough to overcome what was a simply good career. Reputation as dirty player won’t help either.
Steve Thomas - Like Damphousse he wasnt really an elite player for all that long. Good career totals are a result of compiling.
Glenn Anderson - Two short of 500 goals may doom him; He will always be looked at as getting a lot of goals from playing on the Oilers. Really the teams were great but you cant let them all in.
Brian Bellows - Scored 40 or more goals four times including 55 in 89-90. Never reached 100 points, and youngest Captain in NHL history. A storied career but guys scored a ton when Bellows played and I dont see him as one of the greats of his generation.
Dale Hunter - A great scorer for a tough guy, Hunter still never scored 30 goals or 80 points. Cheap shot of Pierre Turgeon should be enough alone to keep him out.
Steve Larmer - Got a lot of goals when goals were aplenty. Great second-tier player.
Kevin Lowe - Really, should all the Oilers get in?
Rick Middleton - Between 79 and 84 he was a Hall of Famer; the rest he was merely very good. Too short a peak.
Bernie Nichols - In 88-89 he scored an insane 70 goals and 150 points. Too bad it was his last really good season.
Brian Propp - Between 81 and 86 Propp scored; 44, 40, 39, 43 and 40 goals. These were the only time he reached 40 and he never made it to 100 points. Besides the five mentioned season Propp had only 3 other very good seasons.
Bobby Smith - Just very good
Brent Sutter - See above
Dave Taylor - Not enough great seasons
Rick Tocchet - He wasnt as good as Propp and gambling scandal knocks him out
Rick Vaive - Three straight 50 goal seasons, but too many average seasons after.
Pat Verbeek - 500 goal scorer that flew under the radar, he’s a notch below the Hall.
All the goalies - There isnt a Hall of Famer in the bunch. I’d say Barrasso and Richter are the closest, but they fall short of being truly elite.
That leaves up with these 10 candidates to choose four from:
Ron Francis
Igor Larionov
Al MacInnis
Mark Messier
Adam Oates
Scott Stevens
Pavel Bure
Dino Ciccarelli
Phil Housley
Doug Gilmour
Messier is a no brainer to get in. I dont believe that the Committee will be able to deny Ron Francis either. He was the absolute franchise in Hartford and the team was essentially dead from the day it traded him. It was his arrival in Pittsburgh that put the team over the top and gave them two Cups. Also nearly 1800 points is impossible to ignore.
I think the third spot should deservingly go to Adam Oates, who if not for a certain number 99, would be the best set up man if his generation. Oates never won a Cup but was certainly considered one of the best 5 or so at his position for a good decade.
Finally I believe the fourth spot will come down to two Russians; Larionov and Pavel Bure. Both had shorter NHL career so they were not able to compile the numbers of other candidates (Larionov due to the Iron Curtain, Bure injuries). I think the call will go to Larionov of this year and Bure will have to wait but will get in.
As for the rest, I think MacInnis and Stevens will certainly get in, Gilmour I’d say 60-40 to the yes side, while Housley and Ciccarelli fall short.
NHL ROUND TWO
Only eight teams remain in the quest for the Cup and the race at this point is as wide open as it has ever been. The most interesting storyline may be that of the goalies; in each conference two legends (Brodeur and Hasek) remain while the rest of the six teams all have netminders looking to prove their postseason mettle and raise the big trophy for the first time. While Brodeur and Hasek need no introduction, here is a quick run down of the other seven (SJ platoon):
Ryan Miller –Buffalo- The sophomore is already the best US born goalie in the NHL and should be a fixture in Buffalo for years to come. Won two rounds in the playoffs last season before falling in seven games to the eventually champion Hurricanes. Some questions about consistency as he hit a few rough patches during the season.Ray Emery – Ottawa – Another sophomore, Emery was thrust into a starting role last season after Hasek injured his groin in the Olympics. Emery played well but the Sens had their annual playoff disappointment. After Ottawa signed Martin Gerber in the off season, Emery was again slated to be the backup, but Gerber struggled badly and Emery took the reins early in the season. Regarded as rather fiery, Emery could quickly become a local legend if he is the man to finally get Ottawa over the hump.Henrik Lundqvist – NY Rangers – Yet another second year player, Lundqvist was a surprise rookie breakout last season as he posted huge regular season number and won the Gold Medal for native Sweden. After disappointing playoffs, last year, Henrik started this season cold but has bounced back strong and is looking as good as any other goalie right now.Roberto Loungo – Vancouver – Loungo is already considered to be, if not the best, one of the best three goalies in the league. Finally saved from exile in Miami, Loungo put up an MVP type season and now this is the first playoff test for Loungo. He passed the first series with flying colors and now looks to build his post season resume. It should be only a matter of when, not if, when a goalie this good raises the Cup.J.S. Giguere – Anaheim – Giguere grabbed all the headlines in the 02-03 playoffs as he lead the upstart Ducks to within one game of the Cup. Still, not many would list J.S. as one of the top ten backstoppers in the league. After a very strong regular season Giguere and the Ducks are in position for another run that could push him into the games elite. With impending UFA status in a goalie starved market, a deep playoff run couldn’t be better timed for Giguere.Evgeni Nabokov/Vesa Toskala – San Jose – The Sharks have a true two-headed monster in goal as Toskala and Nabokov split playing time for the second straight year. Nabokov appeared in 50 regular season games and Toskala 38; Nabokov played all the minutes in the Sharks first round victory over Nashville, so he at the moment has the upper hand. Nabokov won two rounds in 03-04 and Toskala played all played all but 11 minutes for the Sharks in the playoffs last year, winning one round. If either rides the job to a San Jose Cup, that should solve the starting problem for the Sharks. Given the goalie situation for a number of teams around the league, it is a pretty nice problem to have.Series Predictions:EAST
(1) Buffalo vs. (6) New York Rangers
The Rangers had the easiest first round, quickly dispatching the Thrashers in a sweep. They also have the most talented player in the series in the mercurial Jaromir Jagr. Given these factors, Buffalo is just too deep and too fast for the Rangers.
SABRES IN 5
(2) New Jersey vs. (4) Ottawa
The Devils have the proven system and the steady Hall of Fame goalie. The Senators have the big talents that haven’t got it done in the postseason and the young, unproven, flamboyant goalie. Still I think New Jersey just doesn’t have the blue line presence of past to hold off the Ottawa attack.
SENATORS IN 6
WEST
(1) Detroit vs. (5) San JoseBoth teams are extremely talented with no glaring weaknesses. The Sharks are one of the youngest teams in the league, and extremely inexperienced on the blue line while the Red Wings are battle tested and have waited all year to make up for last seasons playoff upset.
RED WINGS IN 6
(2) Ducks vs. (3) CanucksThis should be the best series of the second round. On paper it seems as though the Ducks have the advantage with the imposing duo of Pronger and Niedermayer on the blue line. Still, I like a minor upset here as Loungo has waited a long time to get to the playoffs and I predict he steals the show.
CANUCKS IN 7
2007 NHL Playoff Preview EAST
(1) Buffalo Sabres vs. (8) New York Islanders
Buffalo started the season red-hot and continued the strong play through a rash of injuries to finish with the best record in the NHL. The Islanders, whom after a tumultuous off season and sneaking into the playoffs on a last day shootout, are riding a huge emotional high and looking to continue their surprising season. Rick Dipietro is most likely out for the series making the Isles task nearly impossible. SABRES IN 5
(2) New Jersey Devils vs. (7) Tampa Bay Lightning
Two teams built with opposite philosophies face off in the first round. New Jersey is of course built around Hall of Fame goalie Martin Brodeur and deploys a defense first philosophy that doesn’t breed top scorers. Tampa is an interesting study in the salary cap era as Lightning GM Jay Feaster as committed a large percentage of the teams cap to its four core stars; LeCavalier, St. Louis, Richards and Boyle. Tampa Bay can score but betting on Johan Holmqvist is outplay Brodeur is hearsay.
DEVILS IN 6
(3) Atlanta Thrashers vs. (6) New York Rangers
The Thrashers make their first ever playoff appearance while the Original Six Rangers make their 50th appearance in the postseason. That meaningless fact of course has no bearing on this playoff series. What does have a bearing is the impact trade deadline pickups Keith Tkachuk and Alexei Zhitnik have had on the Thrashers. Those veterans along with the firepower of Hossa, Kovalchuk and Kozlov should be enough to push the Thrashers past Jagr and Co.
THRASHERS IN 5
(4) Ottawa Senators vs. (5) Pittsburgh Penguins
This is a series that all of the hockey world will have its eyes on as Sidney Crosby and the rest of the young Pens take on Ottawa, one of the few teams able to match the Penguins offensive firepower. While the Penguins are the young, promising and flashy team, Ottawa has been a perennially playoff disappointment. On the other hand, while getting to the playoffs was a huge step for Pittsburgh, the regular season is meaningless to the Sens.
SENATORS IN 7
WEST
(1) Detroit Red Wings vs. (8) Calgary Flames
Calgary is probably the best eight seed ever. They have a world class goalie and forward, they play great at home and have one of the most punishing defenses in recent memory. Detroit meanwhile, is even better at home (29-4-8) has an even more accomplished goalie and allowed 27 less goals on the season. Taken that and the better offensive depth on the Red Wings and I don’t see another eight seed upset.
RED WINGS IN 6
(2) Anaheim Mighty Ducks vs. (7) Minnesota Wild
Anaheim started the season white-hot before losing some steam with Chris Pronger out injured for a spell. The Wild spent the first half of the season treading water with superstar Marian Gaborik out for the bulk of the early going. When Gaborik returned the Wild got hot and sprinted into the playoffs. Both teams are rock solid defensively and very tough on home ice. The Wild have a major offensive drop off after Gaborik and Demitra and surely the Ducks will exploit this by matching Pronger and/or Niedermayer against them every time.
DUCKS IN 7
(3) Vancouver Canucks vs. (6) Dallas Stars
Vancouver is flying high riding Hart candidate Roberto Loungo and a breakout season from the Sedin twins. Dallas is a playoff tested club coming off a disappointing first round loss last season. While Loungo makes his playoff debut, Dallas goalie Marty Turco is feeling the heat of past playoff failures. I don’t see the Canucks applying enough pressure against the better balanced Stars to severely test Turco, or if he plays Mike Smith.
STARS IN 6
(4) Nashville Predators vs. (5) San Jose Sharks
Nashville has the home ice advantage but it is the Shark Tank in San Jose that can be a difficult place to play come playoffs. Both squads boast star forward, young defensemen, and great goalie tandems, but the San Jose pair of Toskala and Nabokov gives them a stopper either way Coach Ron Wilson looks.

QUARTERFINALS:
EAST
(1) Sabres vs. (4) Senators
Winning the Presidents Cup has been a bit of a curse over the last decade or so and I am going to predict that trend continues. Ryan Miller at times has been shaky over the season and with Ty Conklin as backup, there is no backup. Ottawa has long been playoff underachievers, not this year.
SENATORS IN 7
(2) Devils vs. (3) Thrashers
New Jersey is the team with the playoff pedigree and tested system. Still few seem to notice the last two Stanley Cup winners are from the Southeast division. The Devils have lost a host of depth in the last couple seasons. I’ll take this series as a Kari Lehtonen coming out party.
THRASHERS IN 6
WEST
(1) Red Wings vs. (6) Stars
The playoffs are the only season in Detroit and after some disappointments of late that is truer than ever for the Wings. Detroit just has too much overall talent for the Stars to match.

(2) Ducks vs. (5) Sharks
In the battle of California the Sharks inexperience on defense will finally catch up with them.

THE NHL TRADE DEADLINE FALLOUT IN METRICS
Article orginally appeared on www.thefourthperiod.com
My “sabermetric” system is designed to compare all NHL skaters broken into groups of forwards and defensemen. Four of the five categories weigh the average for the group for the season, multiplied by the games played percentage. For example, if all forwards in the season played a total of 1000 games and scored 400 points the points per game is .400. If Player A scored .800 points per games and played all 82 games, the ranking for that category would be 2.000. If Player A had scored .800 ppg, but had played only 41 of 82 possible games; the ranking is 1.000. The four categories that use this metric are; Points per Game, Even Strength Time on Ice, Shots per Minute, Shooting Percentage.
The fifth category used is PM Factor, which is a much more concise and accurate measure of traditional Plus/Minus. PM factor takes into account the even-strength goal differential for a players team, the teams even strength minutes and the even strength minutes for each individual skater. From those numbers an “expected plus/minus (xPm) is derived and PM factor measures “expected plus minus” against actual plus/minus (aPm) (e.g. xPm=20, aPm=20; PM Factor=1.000).These five factors all go into the Overall Factor (OF) with PM factor double weighted for forwards and triple weighted for defenseman. Overall Factor can than be divided by the players’ games played to get a Per Game (PG) Factor.
With that background let’s take a look at the major deals leading up to the deadline this season:(Overall Factor listed as OF for 01-02, 02-03, 03-04, 05-06 unless noted)
To Calgary: Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau
To Boston: Chuck Kobasew and Andrew Ference
Stuart; 1.078, .497, 1.119, 1.128. Stuart was the key in this trade and the numbers bear him out to be the premier player in the deal. In the 02-03 season when Stuart recorded a .497 OF, he missed significant time and scored a 1.132 PG. Stuart has regularly scored above average in ratings across the board. Primeau; .353, .607, .822, .700. Primeau only missed significant time in the 01-02 when he recorded a PG of .877. Overall pretty solid numbers, but given one might be surprised that Primeau recorded PM rating of .426, .455, .621, .621, evidence that his rep as a strong defensive player may be overstated. Ference; .832, .357, .867, .847. In 02-03 Ference recorded a PG rating of .770; Ference has show increased offensive skill recently (1.174 PPG) but a drop in PM Factor from 03-04 to 05-06 (.901 to .684). Far from a slouch, Ference is a passable as a fourth defenseman and very good on the third pair. Kobasew; (02-03:05-06) .254, .619, .853. Only 24, Kobasew has yet to find his niche in the league. With PG ratings of .908, .725, .908, Kobasew has shown the ability to play in the league; his strengths have been generating shots and shooting percentage. Time on ice has been his weakness and now in Boston he should get his chance. To Dallas: Ladislav Nagy
To Phoenix: Mathias Tjarnqvist, 2007 1st Rounder
Nagy; 1.027, 1.229, 1.003, .819. Nagy has been one of the leagues great enigmas all year. After putting up good numbers despite injuries (PG 1.495, 1.317) the last two seasons, Nagy figured to have a huge year if he stayed healthy in 06-07. Nagy has had his health this season, but for unknown reasons the production has been off. The Stars are banking on a rebound and a big playoff run in Dallas could net Nagy big UFA dollars.
Tjarnqvist; (03-04:05-06) .151, .297. Tjarnqvist played in only 18 and 33 games respectively (PG .688, .737) in his first two seasons. In his brief NHL time Tjarnqvist has done little to stand out; at best he looks like a third-line type of player.
To Nashville: Peter Forsberg
To Philadelphia: Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent, 1st & 3rd Rounder
Forsberg; (DNP, 1.520, .785, 1.043). Everyone is well aware that when healthy Forsberg is still perhaps the premier all around player in the world. (PG; DNP, 1.662, 1.650, 1.425) Clearly world-class, the question isn’t what Forsberg can bring, rather if he can bring it. If so, Nashville made a great add that could lead to a Cup, if not they have paid a hefty bounty for a player who can’t play. Upshall; (02-03:05-06) .084, .052, .599. In limited playing times (8, 7, 48 games) Upshall has showed the ability to play in the NHL. (PG .863, .614, 1.023) Viewed as mostly a checking type player Upshall posted a .713 PM factor in 05-06, very respectable for only 48 games. Only 23, he will get his chance as the Flyers rebuild.Parent; No NHL experience. To: New York Islanders: Marc-Andre Bergeron
To: Edmonton: Denis Grebeshkov
Bergeron; (02-03:05-06) .092, .791, 1.214. Bergeron has quickly matured into one of the better young defensemen in the game. Adapting to the league came quick (PG 1.504, 1.201, 1.327) to Bergeron as he has posted excellent numbers across the board on both offense and defense (05-06 PM 1.083, PPG 1.325). Bergeron should be a huge addition for the Islanders.Grebeshkov: (03-04:05-06) .042, .230. The 23 year old Grebeshkov has played in only 33 NHL games over two seasons and is currently playing overseas. Nothing he has shown (PG .857, .651) indicate a future star, but if he can maintain those type of per game ratings over a full season he should be a serviceable player. To Atlanta: Alexei Zhitnik
To Philadelphia: Braydon Coburn
Zhitnik; 1.021, .889, .767, .855. Zhitnik has long been an effective defenseman, more renowned for his offensive abilities (PPG 1.602, .969, 1.251, 1.098) than defensive, (PM .996, .912, .643, .862) the numbers bear this out. Zhitnik will be a helpful addition to the Thrashers playoff run.Coburn; (05-06) .070. With only nine career games before this season (.639 PG) there is little evidence to judge Coburn on. He struggled at times this year but is viewed as a solid prospect. The deal makes sense on both ends. To Atlanta: Keith Tkachuk
To St. Louis: Glen Metropolit, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Round Picks
Tkachuk; 1.302, .944, 1.324, .595. Tkachuk has come back strong after a injury riddled 05-06 (PG 1.191). Throughout his career Tkachuk has been far above league average in all categories and brings a mean streak to Atlanta. A risky move by GM Don Waddell, but a move that should guarantee a playoff berth.Metropolit; .369, .229, DNP, DNP. Returning to the NHL after a three year absence, Metropolit is a checking line type player at best. More of a throw in with the draft picks, he should get a chance to log some decent minutes on a rebuilding St. Louis team.To San Jose: Craig Rivet, 5th Round Pick
To Montreal: Josh Gorges, 1st Round Pick
Rivet; 1.170, 1.093, .909, 1.028. The long-time Hab ranks very well in analysis. His main strength has been his PM factor (1.105, 1.090, .902, .913) and his Time on Ice (1.103, 1.193, 1.109, 1.121) two key factors for a blueliner.Gorges; (05-06) .420. After playing 49 games in his rookie year, (PG .702) Gorges has seen similar results in his second campaign. He doesn’t project to be much more than a 6th defenseman. To Islanders: Richard Zednik
To Washington: 2nd Round Pick
Zednik; 1.112, 1.207, 1.173, .762. Zednik saw his OF fall below 1.000 for the first time due to injury (PG 1.025) in 05-06. A solid wing Zednik gets it done on both ends of the ice (PM 1.014, 1.116, 1.126, .792; PPG 1.173, 1.301, 1.408, .693). Zednik is a good addition to the Islanders as GM Garth Snow is making a playoff push in his first year at the helm.To Vancouver: Brent Sopel
To Los Angeles: 2nd and 4th Round Pick
Sopel; 1.015, .972, 1.098, .742. Sopel returns to the Canucks where he had his greatest success. Sopel is primarily an offensive defenseman (PM .965, .573, .926, .614; PPG 1.178, 1.707, 1.877, 1.060) and should add some punch to the Vancouver offense from the blueline. To Vancouver: Bryan Smolinski
To Chicago: 2nd Round Pick
Smolinski; 1.030, .919, 1.126, 1.153. The Canucks add another solid veteran for a draft pick in Smolinski. Smolinski rates above average across the board except in shooting percentage where he has been consistently below average. A PM of .863 last season is of some concern, but overall he brings a good offensive game to Vancouver. To Detroit: Kyle Calder
To Philadelphia: Lasse Kukkonen & 2nd Round Pick
To Chicago: Jason Williams
Calder; 1.115, .969, .888, 1.124. Calder has been inconsistent over his career after a strong 01-02. He hovers right around league averages in all categories. Calder is weakest at generating shots on net. He should provide depth for the Wings as they try to avoid another playoff flameout and is the best player in the deal.Kukkonen; An old rookie at 25, Kukkonen isn’t considered to be much better than a 5th or 6th defenseman.Williams; .348, .193, .522, 1.013. Williams earned his first real playing time in 05-06 and put up a solid effort. Williams has played well when given the chance; (PG 1.067, 1.109, 1.133, 1.224) though he won’t replicate his scoring of 05-06 (PPG 1.756) he should remain solid for the next few years. To Pittsburgh: Gary Roberts
To Florida: Noah Welch
Roberts; .938, .202, 1.148, .766. At 40 Roberts is still effective when he is healthy (PG 1.114, 1.181, 1.308, 1.084) A tough finisher, Roberts scores high in shooting percentage and points. Pittsburgh is looking to make a playoff run with their kids and a vet like Roberts should provide some toughness and leadership.Welch; (05-06) .094. With all of five games under his belt before this year, (PG 1.539) there isn’t much of a track record on Welch. Most think he is a top four defenseman. To San Jose: Bill Guerin
To St. Louis: Ville Nieminen, Jay Barriball, and 1st Round Pick
Guerin; 1.235, .947, 1.362, .840. Bouncing back after a tough 05-06, Guerin is proving he belongs in the new NHL. A great scorer (PPG 1.759, 1.301, 2.071, .924), Guerin has a PM rating (.771, .685, 1.117, .752) that indicates he is a defensive liability.Nieminen; .826, .708, .692, .750. A below average forward; Nieminen struggles badly to score. He has shown some defensive ability at times (PM .929, .642, .881, .907) but still doesn’t rate better than a stopgap.Barriball; No NHL experience. To Boston: Aaron Ward
To Rangers: Paul Mara
Ward; .886, .737, .611, .935. The veteran Ward ranks as an average defenseman. Known more for his defense, the PM isn’t great (.998, .751, .624, .868). Most of his career high .935 OF last season was due to a high shot percentage score (1.500). Ward is nothing more than a good 5 or 6 on the blue line.Mara; .920, 1.022, 1.123, 1.185. After improving every year in the league, Mara took a step backward in his hometown of Boston this year. Still, Mara is six years younger and already better than Ward. Offensively gifted, the PM (.716, .751, 1.019, .832) have been really poor for a defenseman. Still the deal is a steal for the Rangers. To Buffalo: Dainius Zubrus, Timo Helbling
To Washington: Jiri Novotny, 1st Round Pick
Zubrus; .995, .861, .662, 1.057. Often hampered by injuries, there is no doubt Zubrus can play. (PG 1.149, 1.121, 1.006, 1.220) Zubrus doesn’t excel at any one facet, but brings a solid all around game. His 05-06 PPG (1.317) and PM (1.023) are very encouraging. Helbling; Rookie, 2 games experience.Novotny; (05-06) .140 (PG .820). With only 14 games before this season, Novotny is just cutting his teeth in the NHL and could develop as a third liner. To Detroit: Todd Bertuzzi
To Florida: 2 conditional draft picks
Bertuzzi: 1.338, 1.435, 1.083, 1.067. Everyone knows the Bertuzzi story. Once amongst the games elite, he hasn’t quite been the same since the Stephen Moore incident. Still above average, it is unknown when or how he will come back from surgery. The picks are all conditional so it is a no risk, high reward situation for Detroit. To Boston: Dennis Wideman
To St. Louis: Brad Boyes
Wideman; (05-06) .793. Playing 67 games in his rookie year, (PG .971) Wideman showed good offensive ability, especially getting the puck on net (Min/Shot 1.228). On the flip side, his .560 PM rating was terrible.Boyes; 03-04:05-06) .006, 1.267. Playing only one game in 03-04, Boyes was a surprise breakthrough player in 05-06, posting the best OF on the Bruins. Boyes impressed with a PPG of 1.595 and PM 1.296. His play has dropped off badly this year; if 05-06 proves to be a fluke it’s a good deal for Boston, if he regains his form, it will be another trade Bruins fans long rue. To Los Angeles: Jaroslav Modry, Johan Fransson, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Round Picks
To Dallas: Mattias Norstrom, Konstantin Pushkarev, 3rd and 4th Round Picks
Modry; 1.072, 1.183, 1.020, .992. Modry is an excellent offensive player (PPG 1.979, 1.753, 1.430, 1.439) and slightly below average on the defensive end (PM .908, .785, 1.167, .785). Joining Blake and Visnovsky he gives LA a lot of depth at defense.Fransson; No NHL experience
Norstrom; .830, .735, .873, .886. Norstrom doesn’t bring anything close to the offense that Modry brings, but is slightly better on the defensive end (PM .939, 1.061, .843, .883). Even so, he is a downgrade from Modry for Dallas. Pushkarev; Rookie, 17 games experience. To Islanders: Ryan Smyth
To Edmonton: Robert Nilsson, Ryan O’Marra, 1st Round Pick
Smyth; .899, 1.074, 1.207, 1.153. A huge addition for the Islanders will get hopes higher than they have been in Long Island for awhile. Smyth is a premier scorer with PPG ratings of 1.333, 1.587, 1.602 and 1.525 over the last four seasons. He came at a big price, but it will be well worth it to generate some playoff excitement.Nilsson and O’Marra; No NHL experienceTo Toronto: Yanic Perreault, 5th Round PickTo Phoenix: Brendan Bell, 2nd Round PickPerreault; 1.200, .986, .820, .944. Always a solid scorer, Perreault has enjoyed a renaissance since the Coyotes picked him up about a month into the season. One of the leagues best face-off men; he should be a great help to the Leafs playoff push.
Bell; Rookie, 1 game experience before 06-07.
An Up and Down Weekend
The Bruins in their rollercoaster season have developed a trend of building up optimism only to tear it just down as quickly and this weekend was quite the microcosm of that tendency. Friday night the Bruins downed the potent Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 6-2. The Lightning are currently leading the Southeast division and have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL of late. The impressive victory gave the Bruins an 8-2 record over their last 10 games and furthered hope for a late season playoff run.
Saturday night the Bruins traveled down to Miami to meet the Florida Panthers, in 13th place in the 15 team Eastern Conference. The Bruins didn’t come out looking like a team playing it second game in as many nights; they looked like they were playing their 12th game in two nights. Flat and listless, the Bruins allowed the Panthers to hammer goalie Tim Thomas for the tune of three first period goals. Bruins Coach Dave Lewis lifted Thomas between the first and second periods for young goalie Hannu Toivonen. While Thomas certainly looked like he needed to come out of the game, inserting Toivonen, who hadn’t played in nearly a month and has struggled mightily in his sophomore season, is certainly a questionable tactic. Much has made of Hannu struggling with his confidence this year and inserting him into a lost game in front of a disinterested team doesn’t exactly seem like a recipe to build a youngsters confidence. The game progressed much as the first period and Boston was defeated 7-2.With 21 games and six weeks left in the regular season the Bruins sit 11th in the conference, six points out of the 8th spot. Notes -Boston claimed goalie Joey MacDonald off of waivers from Detroit over the weekend. This will at least mean Toivonen will be headed to Providence for the balance of the season or perhaps the will be dealt before the Tuesday deadline. MacDonald, 27, has eight career games with a 1-5-1 record. -Winger Marco Sturm signed a four-year deal to remain in Boston. He is the last player left on the Bruins roster from the Joe Thornton trade just over a year ago.-Keith Tkachuk was dealt to the Atlanta Thrashers from St. Louis on Sunday. St. Louis received a 1st, 2nd, 3rd round picks and journeyman Glen Metropolit. -The Thrashers made an earlier deal acquiring veteran defenseman Alexei Zhitnik in exchange for top prospect defenseman Brandon Coyburn. Clearly Thrashers GM Don Waddell has decided that this is the season for Atlanta to finally break through and make the playoffs. After a fast start to the season Atlanta has struggled and Waddell adding Tkachuk and Zhitnik should get then to the postseason. Bruins Playoff PictureLeft for dead only a short while ago, the inconsistent Bruins find themselves on another streak that has the fans thinking playoffs again. Boston has bagged six points in their last three games, 10 in the last six and a solid 14 points in their last nine contests. Despite the excitement the recent run has generated, the Bruins sit in 12th in the East and face a daunting climb to the 8th and final playoff spot in the conference. With 23 games remaining and sitting only five points out of a playoff bid, it does not seem to be impossible for the Bruins to reach the playoffs. Still it will be no easy task to overtake four teams in the final weeks of the season in order to secure the postseason bid. Currently the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes occupies the 8th spot in the East with 69 points through 63 games. The New York Islanders sit 9th with 68 points in 61 games and the rival Montreal Canadians are 7th with 70 points in 63 games. Judging from the current standings, it rationale to conclude that it will take 90 points to reach the playoffs in the East. For the Bruins to attain the 90 point plateau, they will need 28 points in the final 23 games; or a record of something like 12-7-4, not completely out of the realm of possibility, but a tall task for a team that carries the second worst goals differential in the Conference.NOTES-It has been reported the Bruins are very close to signing winger Marco Sturm to a contract believed to be 4-5 years. Sturm is solid, but SI.com may have summed it up best last week with a caption reading “Sturm has been a promising player for years now” A LOOK AT THE STATS DATABASE 2005-06 RESULTS A Statistical Look Back on the 2005-06 SeasonWithout delving to deep into the formulas, it basically measures forwards and defense averages ( 1.000) being the average) for a variety of different categories designed to measure the all-around game of each player and weighing each factor to come up with an “Overall Factor”. Lets take a look at the final numbers and see what we see;The Top 10 ForwardsPlayer Overall FactorJaromir Jagr 1.644 Joe Thornton 1.559
Jonathan Cheechoo 1.532
Alexander Ovechkin 1.530
Brian Gionta 1.505
Sidney Crosby 1.473 Dany Heatley 1.472Marian Hossa 1.439Teemu Selanne 1.430Brian Rolston 1.398Pretty much the type of players you would expect on this list; we all know who the top players are, what we are trying to do is distinguish them from each other. First and second place are Jagr and Thornton, the players who finished 1-2 in the MVP balloting. Joe took the Hart, but my calculations have Jagr with the most productive overall season. If one is to argue that the mark of an MVP is making ones teammates better, Cheechoo coming in third is a huge boost to the Thornton supporters. Cheechoo, of course ended up leading the league in goals after breaking out big time once being paired with Jumbo Joe. Brian Gionta was another sniper wing who broke out big time in 05-06 and lands in fifth place. No group of players made an impact in 05-06 quite like the rookies, the bog two Ovechkin and Crosby finish 4th and 6th here respectively so it looks like the Calder Trophy voters went the right way with Ovechkin. The 1.530 and 1.473 scores they put up, were, not surprisingly the two highest scores for any rookies in the four seasons I charted. The next two players on the chart, Heatley and Hossa, were traded for each other just a couple of years back. These two players are two of the games great superstars that manage to fly way under the radar. Far from the biggest names in the game, they are two of the most exciting players out there. Looking at their trade in hindsight, I am having a hard time coming up with a one for one deal of two better players in the NHL in recent history. Anyone have anything? Finally we round out the Top 10 with two players with very different games. Teemu Selanne is a pure scorer and had a huge bounce back year with the new rules. Often a healthy scratch just two seasons ago, Selanne vaulted back into the games elite. Brian Rolston is one of the types of players whose true value can be better evaluated in this system. Long known as one of the games best all-around players, Rolston still is not a guy you would think listed as a ten best forward player in the league, here he shines outperforming most other forwards in the league. A prime example of why goals and points cannot be the lone measure of a player.
The Defenseman
Player Overall Factor
Lubomir Visnovsky 1.454
Nicklas Lidstrom 1.444
Sergei Zubov 1.404
Bryan McCabe 1.395
Mathieu Schneider 1.365
Tomas Kaberle 1.357
Dion Phaneuf 1.356
Joseph Corvo 1.351
Chris Pronger 1.332
Scott Niedermayer 1.321
Once again we see the cream of the crop rise here. For defenseman, scoring is done much more by a group of a few elite defensemen so we see the scorers floating to the top in a higher proportion than the forwards. Visnovsky had a huge break out year to lead the league here, yet was not even a Norris Trophy finalist. The Norris, like the Hart, went to our second place finisher Nicklas Lidstrom, his fourth time winning the award. Given the small margin between Nick and Visnovsky, one can’t really fault the award but shouldn’t have Visnovsky been a finalist at least? The other two finalist were Sergei Zubov, well deserved with a 3rd overall finish, and Scott Niedermayer who finished 10th. While John Buccigross has gone as far as calling Niedermayer the best overall player in the game, it does seem his Norris nomination had a lot to do with his huge reputation. Fourth and sixth place were held down by the Maple Leafs big duo of McCabe and Kaberle who both posted some of the biggest numbers of their careers. We find another partner in fifth, as Nicklas Lidstroms’ teammate Mathieu Schneider had an impressive season. Dion Phaneuf is the future of defense and look for him to move up this list in coming years and collect some Norris Trophies. Joe Corvo comes in 8th making it the third set of teammates on this list. Corvo, like Visnovsky, had a huge breakout season in LA. Corvo has since moved on to Ottawa and will try to replace Zdeno Chara. The mention of Chara might lead one to wonder where is Big Z and his former teammate Wade Redden? One factor in this formula is that all seven categories used in the overall calculation are each weighed by the percentage of games each player played in during the season. Both Chara and Redden missed significant time during the year and that caused them to miss the top ten. (Redden 28th, Chara 30th) The last two spots in the top ten are rounded out by two defensemen on their way to the Hall of Fame, Pronger and Niedermayer. Both players are widely hailed as being better than the 9th and 10th best defenseman in the league; still this is a one season snapshot and not an end all rating.
A Predictor?
Can this formula be applied to predict who will break out? I tried using the Per Game rankings for my “sleeper” breakouts this season. I was looking for players who had a decent sample size (25-60 games) but who had for any reason missed a good portion of the season. At the same time omitting the obvious players who were injured (i.e. Rick Nash) Some of the candidates:
Player PG Factor Games
Daniel Briere 1.402 48
Colby Armstrong 1.366 47
Ladislav Nagy 1.317 51
Martin Havlat 1.285 18
Marek Svatos 1.264 61
Tim Connolly 1.188 63
Steve Bernier 1.174 38
Matt Carle 1.548 12
Sami Salo 1.340 59
Kurtis Foster 1.236 58
