Chapter 17

The rest of the morning flew by swiftly as the trio worked. Finally finished, Sara stepped back and looked at the results of their labors. She circled the pair of them slowly, casting a critical eye at the two men. They looked back at her, their gazes solemn. Both knew what the outcome of the next few hours could be and yet, somehow they hoped that Sara was spared that knowledge.

Finally satisfied, Sara nodded her head. “Well, Messrs. Nottingham, it would appear our work is done for the moment.”

She stepped back and gestured towards her mirror. “Tell me what you think.”

As one the two men moved forward. They stared into the mirror, at each other.

Dressed identically in the clothing Luke had brought with him from the mansion they were now exact mirror images of each other. From cap, to gloves, to long black overcoat. Luke’s beard had been trimmed to the same length as Ian’s, and Ian’s hair had been trimmed to match Luke’s. Sara mourned the loss of Ian’s longer length of hair the most. While their hair was still long, she missed the extra length Ian had. She had gathered up his severed locks of hair when they were changing their clothes; braiding them into a silken plait she had tucked into her bra.

Her hands had trembled as she had trimmed Luke’s beard. It had disturbed her to be so close to him. His desire for her was somehow closer to the surface than Ian’s, more evident and open. His hungry eyes followed her every move and his nostrils flared as she came closer to him; breathing deeply of her womanly scent. Possibly it was because Ian had experienced the culmination of his passion, his satisfaction more recent. While it seemed that Luke’s contact with her this morning had just sharpened his appetites, and it also seemed, hers.

Sara wasn’t quite sure how she felt about that whole mess yet. Ian wasn’t bothered at all. Luke, well, she knew what Luke wanted. Everytime she was near him she could feel the intense waves of want that poured from him. It seemed as if he wanted nothing more than to consume her.

As for herself, having just taken the risk of opening herself up to her feelings for Ian she just didn’t know. She was attracted to Luke, he was, for all intents and purposes Ian. A different part of Ian’s personality, but still him. And god help her, her mind kept wandering down the path of what it would be like to be in bed with both of them. To be surrounded by and at the willing mercy of their combined strength and power. To share in the conflagration that would occur when their trinity was joined.

“I’m going to shower and get myself ready, ok guys?” Sara turned away swiftly so they wouldn’t see her tears. She wasn’t sure exactly what they had planned, or what would happen but her instincts were telling her it wasn’t good. Fear for Ian and Luke both battled with her desire. She just wasn’t ready. She needed more time to explore the two of them. It just wasn’t fair! Dammit!

Luke and Ian watched Sara as she swiftly entered the bathroom. Both could sense her emotions, and both ached for her pain. Tears were not something they immediately associated with their Lady. Yet, their course was set. What choice did they really have? No matter how much they wanted to take Sara and disappear they knew Irons’ long reach would eventually catch up with them. Better to face it now, on their terms. Their unspoken communication left them in agreement. Now was the time to act. For good or for bad.

As the bathroom door shut behind Sara there was a knock on her front door. Before either of them could move the door was pushed open and Gabriel walked in, again.

“Hey Pez, man, do you ever lock your door? Is this some kind of cop thing?” His voice trailed off as he stared before him. Looking back at him were two Ian Nottingham’s, neither one very pleased to see him.

“Woah, shit…I mean, damn…uh…oh crap.” Gabe ran his finger around the collar of his shirt. Even though several buttons were undone, it still felt constricted.

“Uh…hi guys. Is Sara around?” Gabe hated the way his voice sounded weak to his own ears. Man, if one of these dudes was scary, two was absolutely terrifying.

The two just stared at him, then at each other with an unspoken question. What should they do now?

“Wow, Nottingham.” Gabe looked from one to the other, seeking some glimpse of which one was the Nottingham he thought he knew. “Like, I didn’t know you had a brother. He just get into town? Do you both work for Irons?”

Ian was the first to speak as he moved forward. Amused, as Gabe inched back until his back was up against the wall. The kid had guts, he’d give him that, but he was smart too. Smart enough to be afraid.

“Mr. Bowman, may I introduce my brother, Luke.” Ian gestured with one elegant gloved hand in Luke’s direction.

“Great, man. Pl…pleased to meet ya.” Gabe could feel the wall against his shoulder blades and was while he was grateful for it’s support, part of his brain still acknowledged he had spent way too much time up against this wall lately.

“Luke flashed one of his sparkling grins in Gabriel’s direction. It was rather amusing to tease the young man. He walked forward until he was on Gabe’s right, while Ian stood on Gabe’s left. Both Ian and Luke smiled at each other. This really was kind of fun, working in tandem.

“Yes, I too, work for Kenneth Irons; but possibly not for much longer. I could be looking for work soon. You have quite an intriguing business. Are you interested in taking on an investor…possibly a partner?”

Gabe watched Luke’s intense eyes uneasily. “Uh…that would be difficult.”

Luke grinned widely once again. “Oh, I could talk to you, about difficult.”

As Gabe stared up at the two of them, Sara walked out of the bathroom. She had forgotten to get her robe and wanted to grab it before her shower.

“Gabe!” She exclaimed. “Guys, get away from him. Have you no manners at all?”

As the two dark clad men walked rather sulkily away Gabe exhaled his breath in a noisy, relieved sigh. He felt like a small mouse that had just had a lucky escape from two large tomcats.

“Uh, hey Pez. I just came to see how you and Nottingham were doing. Obviously, he’s feeling better.”

“That was really sweet of you Gabe.” Sara walked over and gave Gabe a kiss and a hug. She glared at Ian and Luke on the other side of the room. “Sorry about the terrible twins.”

Unable to help himself, Luke glared back. The sight of young Gabriel’s arm around Sara as he returned her hug made Luke clench his jaw. His amusement with Gabe vanished in a haze of deep primal anger.

Ian grabbed Luke’s arm. He could sense Luke’s anger and worked to dilute it. “Luke, you will have to get used to this. You cannot kill everyone she touches.”

“Why not?” Luke didn’t even look in Ian’s direction. All his attention directed towards Gabe.

“Because, you must trust the Lady Sara. If she is to be ours, it must be willingly. You must learn control. Young Gabriel is not our enemy.” Luke unclenched his jaw slowly.

“As you wish brother.” Luke rolled his shoulders back and relinquished his battle ready stance. “I will confess, there is much I still do not understand.”

Giving Gabe a push towards the couch, Sara headed back towards the bathroom. “I’m going to try to take that shower. Why don’t you guys make Gabe some breakfast while you all wait?” She winked at Gabe. “Luke here makes a mean omelet.”

Ian and Luke turned to look at each again, and then over to Gabe. Gabe sank down onto the couch and waved a hand weakly in their direction.

“No, no guys. Don’t bother. That’s okay. I’m fine.”

With a shrug Ian and Luke dropped their coats and headed back to the kitchen. Lady’s Sara every wish was their command.
