Ashlyn: (thinks to herself) I can’t believe it a year relationship gone down the drain. Tracey and me had something so special, (pause) until I had to move to L.A. It wasn’t but two weeks and we were writing each other constantly. Then the letters wasn’t as frequent and finally he mails me one that said he can’t take being in a long distance relationship and he can’t stand being so far away from me and it don’t look like I was moving any closer so lets just break it off now before we do something we will regret. Huh-Whatever.
Krystal: Girl don’t sweat it ( starts to sing) don’t stay with someone who makes you cry don’t hide all the love you have in side its hard to see the sun if you don’t open your eyes don’t let really love pass you by.
Ashlyn: (I couldn’t help but to laugh at her) girrrlll first you got the words wrong second its easier said than done
Dee: Don’t worry be happy (We all started to laugh) but fa really fa get him lets start our new life in L.A. trust me you will find better
Krystal : Yeah that’s right (she said with a far off look in her eyes) and how ‘bout we start right now
Me, Krystal, and Dee sat on the top three benches on the bleachers with the some of our home girls from the neighborhood Diamond, Amanda, Aundria, and Rhonda and watched three guys play every man for himself, a basketball game, for a couple of hours. Then the guys came and sat on the bottom two benches of the bleachers and started whispering and looking back at us. So I just put my head on my knees and started thinking
Ashlyn: (thinks to herself) I already know what was going to happen next They’ll say “hey hi ya’ll doing.” Then they be like “what’s your name.” AANNDD we‘re off.
Boy 1: hey hi ya’ll doing
Girls: Fine
Boy 2: yeah I been seeing few of ya’ll around but I ain’t seen these three a lot (pointing to Ashlyn, Dee, and Krystal)
Boy 3: yeah so what’s ya’ll name
Ashlyn: (started to giggle)
Amanda: (introducing everybody) well hey I’m Amanda and this is Rhonda, Dee, Diamond, Aundria and....
Krystal: (cutting her off) and I’m Krystal
Boy 1: I’m Marques but you can call me Marq
Boy 3: I’m Kelton but they call me kel
Boy 2: I’m Jerome
Ashlyn: (to herself imitating what Jerome would say next) but you can call me Rome
Jerome: But call me Rome
Ashlyn: (starts to laugh)
Jerome: And what’s your name
Aundria: (butting in) Oh and this is Ashlyn. Her, Dee, and Krystal moved here from North Chuck town South Cacillac
All three
boys: (with a puzzled look on their face) North Chuck town , (pause then looking at each other) South Cacillac
Krystal: North Charleston, South Carolina (Krystal said cluing them in on the terms she used)
All three
boys: oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh
Marques: So what’s wrong wit her
Dee: She just going through a little break up
Ashlyn: (thinking to herself) Ha little break up try major and when did you start telling all my bizz
Rhonda: Oh my god I know who ya’ll are your, your, your
Kelton: Yes that’s who we are
Ashlyn: (thinks to herself) who are they (but to depressed to look up)
Jerome: Well Ashlyn can I talk to you really quick
Ashlyn: (lifts up head and looks at him reaching his hand out but the sun is in her eyes so she can’t see who he is and why Rhonda was so excited then took his hand and they walked down to the picnic tables)
Jerome: So what happened or you don’t want to talk about it
Ashlyn: (while staring up at the sky) No I don’t mind, (pause) see I had this boyfriend of one year
Jerome: Dang a whole year
Ashlyn: Yeah I know (now looking back at everyone else) any way it was going good until I moved out
here
Jerome: what he cheat on you
Ashlyn: (rolling her eyes) hell no, but, we did break up he said long distance relationship wasn’t for him and he didn’t want us to do anything we would regret
Jerome: Dang man he took the cheap way out
Ashlyn: Yeah I know
Marques: (yelling from across the court) A Rome come on man we ’bout to ride out we still got to meet with the rest of tha guys
Jerome: Yeah I’m coming
Ashlyn: (to herself) Rome dang that sound familiar
Jerome: Well I’m ‘bout to ride
Ashlyn: Yeah I heard
Jerome: ha ha but naw really we having a little get together with tha rest of my boys and I was wandering if you and your friends wanted to come
Ashlyn: naw I don’t think I’m up to going
Jerome: Aw come on
Ashlyn: well I’ll think ‘bout it but I ain’t making no promises
Jerome: well if you change your mind then call me up, here is my number don’t be shy
Ashlyn: (hands her his number on the back of a business card. She looks down at the name and realizes who it might be then looks up to see this light skinned honey brown and brown colored hair light brown eyed boy staring back at her. She looks at him wide eyed ) Romeo
Jerome: Yeah that’s my stage name but just call me...
Jerome & Ashlyn: Rome
Ashlyn: Yeah I know but, WOW
Jerome: So I will see ya’ll tonight
Ashlyn: Maybe I still don’t know
Jerome: ‘ight then I see ya around
Ashlyn: bye (after they left her friends came and joined her at the table)
Rhonda & Krystal: So what did ya’ll talk about
Diamond: Yeah inquiring minds want to know
Ashlyn: Well he did ask why me and Tracey broke up and then asked if we wanted to go chill with them and their home boys at they crib but I said I didn’t know
all the
girls: Girl what’s wrong with you are you crazy
Amanda: IMX’s Romeo just holla’ d at you and you still front cause of Tracey
Rhonda: we all know you want him
Aundria: Hell yeah and we know you want to go to the party too
Dee & Krystal: Forget that we all want to go to that damn party
Diamond: So call his ass
