#1, GNR was not a just a rock band. axl said early on that the guns sound was a synthesis of different types of music. the were labeled as such, but had as much to do with punk and metal as rock and roll. even UYI II is kind of bluesy.
#2, the old guns was so powerful because of the synergy of axl, slash, and duff, combined with axl and izzy's songwriting. duff and steve were vital parts of the band. thats why when they kicked steve out they needed a drummer as good as matt sorum. duff was the linchpin. on the UYI live in tokyo videos, he talks about how his ability to play every instrument, and especially the drums, helped the band. do not discount the contributions of duff.
#3, axl's new band will be very good. but it will not be GNR. I don't think that axl gives a floating turd about commercial success, but I could be wrong. if I see axl on TRL, I will put every item related to axl rose on eBay the next day and the smashing pumpkins will be my favorite band.
#4, axl's new band should be called "Axl Rose and the Guns"
