my 760 showed these failure during a hdd problem. i wasn't able to locate the real source of this problem.
BUT after dismantling the black plastic part above the data cable my hd was running without any problems. afterwards i fixed all with "hot-glue",to prevent loose contacts. and its still running.
the best way to install w98 on your thinkpad is to install ms-dos at first. this OS includes a server-client programm using the parallel port or serial(i'am not sure).
but it only works with hds und 8 gigs,i guess.
the program is called "dos interlink".
i an .txt you can look for more information on this topic.
moreover you just can use harddisks. the prog. isn't able to mount cds.
