Your 2nd HDD might be also defective!? Try another drive and enter bios and let your TP recall values. There is a Button you should press. It might help to reconginze the HDD.

Installing a new HDD didn't need extra software, but you need to have full access=all rights to your BIOS settings.

The 2,5toIDE adapter ist cheap hardware. It's easier to buy it as to solder it.
