I had the same problem... brought my TP560Z in for repair, and they kept my FDD, claiming I never gave it to them. So here is my solution: Get a CF-to-PCMCIA adapter, and boot from compact flash! It works, but only with a few tricks. First, you need to set the right boot sequence in the BIOS: PCMCIA, FDD, HDD.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: There is this IBM utility that you need to rewrite the MBR on the CF card, or else it won't boot. I forget what it's called - if you can't find it yourself, contact me, I'll look it up. Anyway, after "enabling" the CF card with this utility, you can format /sys it, put all your DOS utilities on it, and it'll boot your thinkpad. Of course, if your thinkpad is down, you need another CF drive to write stuff to the card in the first place. However, after enabling the card, almost any CF drive will do the formatting etc. - in my case, I was able to use my Olympus (E100-RS) digital camera as a USB CF drive.

You can then also install DOS USB drivers on your Thinkpad and use a USB drive to transfer all the neccesary OS installation files, like the I386 folder from the W2K CD.
