I think it would depend on the manufacturer, for mine (Yokohama Geolandar 31x10.5-15 M/T) recommended rim with was 7"-9".

I would say if they have a pretty good sidewall they would be OK.

The problem you run into is with the narrow rim and tall tires the sidewalls feel "mushy" and can be hazardous for high speed cornering. You will also tend to wear the center of the tread out. (thanks for the reminder Paul)
I had some 36" Buckshot radials on an old truck and they tended to "waterbed" in the corners, but if you know the limitations of your tire you don't push it.

The narrower rims (IMO) are better for low tire pressure off-roading (sand dunes, beaches, rock crawling) They are less likely to slip a bead and deform to the obstacles more. Plus they tend to decrease the section width and round the corners, which helps for clearances.

I have a buddy running 35" pro-comps on his stock 7" Amigo rims, it is real "wiggly" in the corners, and not recommended, but it worked. He's currently building a 7.5" IFS suspension lift and going to 40" tires (wider rims and less rear spacing, of course)

Bottom line- I'd try it since you already have the tires.
I do think that they will rub the frame at full lock (mine have a finger width), but you can add spacers or tack a shim on the stops.
