VW has been doing the same thing for 20 years the 4, 5 & 6 cyl. used in trucks in Europe all are the same (per cylinder displacement) using all the same accessories, distributor, water pump, etc. They just add cyl when the application needs more power. It seems to make sense to me in the long run. In line engines have always been more durable than Vs.
