Alex, I won't be of much help to you but I thought this is in the same vein - 'hope you don't mind me piggybacking a similar question onto yours....
I'm using a Seymour Duncan Convertible 100 (with the funky interchangable preamp modules,) and am wondering the same thing. The sheer number of tonal combinations with all of those preamps (15 in all were available when S-D still made them, any three of which are combined per channel,) makes trial and error an enormous task. I remember when these amps first came out in the late 80s I tried one in the store that was set up as "fusion" but can't remember which modules were used.
