I posted this to the "other" Shawn Lane list on Yahoo and thought I'd share my thoughts here as well:

Just received my copy of Icon. I wanted to assure anyone who loved Good People, that they will also love this one as well. IMO it has some of the strongest Jonas playing yet and Shawn is at his understated best. I tend to wonder if something might have been lost since I understand that Shawn's parts were added after, and I suspect some of the spontaneity might be missing. However, I also wonder if I would have even entertained this thought had I not read that Shawn was added to the mix afterwards?

I don't know if this will make sense, but IMO the Lane/Helborg/Selvaganesh/Umashankar collaborations are the best example of West meets East . . . as opposed to Shakti which, to me, was/is more of an East meets West kind of thing. What I mean is that Lane/Hellborg seem to have more completely "humbled" themselves to the Eastern influence and have not tried to make the Eastern elements "fit" their Western/jazz elements. Or to put it another way, given the choice between Shakti and L/H/S/U, I'll take the latter :)
