Subject: 1953 Firefly crash, engine recovered

Some years ago (late 80's) a group of aviation enthusiasts from the Enniskillen area worked to recover a Royal Navy Firefly that crashed in Portstewart Bay while returning to RNAS Eglinton in 1953.

I was in my early teens at the time and was onboard the 'Bar Maid', the former Coleraine dredger from which the dive team operated (my Dad was the dredger's skipper and I had the only camera!).

Although the wreck was very complete, the weight of sand in the fuselage meant that the whole wreck could not be lifted from the seabed. However, the entire Rolls Royce Griffon engine complete with cowling and bent prop was recovered. This was taken to Enniskillen.

Does anyone know what happened to this engine since? I seem to remember the contact as Roy Gibson. There was an interesting story in that the crew were rescued by a local fisherman who saw the crash and apparently film footage exists of the recovery, although I never saw this.

Cheers,
Neal Anderson
