Subject: Lough Erne crashes

To update my postings of last year, we recently searched Lough Erne for the Catalinas scuttled in 1947. Data obtained using side-scan sonar combined with our own echo sounder provided some interesting results but unfortunately zero visibility in the lough combined with formidible depths prevented us from coming up with conclusive results despite the invaluble help from the Hailstone Aviation Club.We had the pleasure of having Flight Lieutenant Bill Watters on board, who as a young RAF man actully sank the Catalinas in 1947 ! Bill put us on the right area of the lough as proved by our readings but we shall have to return at a later date with more sophisticated equipment if we are to positively identifiy the Catalinas.Which we shall do!
While on the Lough we dived on on the wreck of Sunderland W3995 of 228 SQN and substantial wreckage was discovered. At another site we found many unexploded bombs and depth charges. Rather frightening indeed ! In response to the fears expressed by various parties when I posted a notice on the site last year that we where diving the Lough, no war graves were dived or even went near. What we want to do is locate the scuttled Catalinas and there were no fatalities on Sunderland W3995.
