My very first piercing, was, of course, my ears when I was 6 or 7 years old. Little did I know that those simple, crappy, cheap, Wal-Mart piercings would start a chain reaction that has, as of now, not yet ended and I have a feeling, they won't, for a long time to come. I will probably be a 90 year old lady, sitting in my rocking chair with my grandkids hanging off of my nose or eyebrow ring.
By the time I was 12 years old, I wanted my nose pierced really bad because my mother and I had met a local tattoo artist and got to be pretty good friends with him, which is really where the obsession started for me. His wife had her nose pierced and he did too, and I thought it looked so cool on them. I remember before I met them, thinking that tattoos and piercings were 'freaky', but they changed my mind. Now I am one of those 'freaky' outcasts of society, and I wouldn't have it any other way. My friends and I are the token punk/goths.
It is so true that piercings are addictive though, a fact which my grandmother hates. She is really the only one that has a problem with my piercings. Everytime I mention one I want, she says "Oh god, don't do that!". Even my teachers and all the 'prprepsat school think my nose looks good. I am so glad they allow freedom of expression at my high school.
Anyway, I got my right nostril pierced sometime around Christmas as a gift from my aunt, but I could not keep the stud in. Everytime I went to bed, I would wake up and it would be missing. Once I went so far as to use my metal detector to find it as I knew it was somewhere on my floor around my bed. Well, I did find it, embedded in my carpet, and got it put back in, only to have it FALL OUT AGAIN! Argh! Heh, well, I decided I had had enough of that and decided to leave it out because my poor nose was beginning to get quite sore and red from all the poking and prodding of trying to replace my jewelry...
About 3 or 4 months later, I decided that I wanted to give it another shot, so we went down to the Lilac Lizard, our friend's studio in Kalispell, and asked him to do my nose for me AGAIN...We filled out all the paperwork, releases and such, and proceeded to follow him to the back room, (also known as Wayne's Torture Chamber). He told me to sit in the big ololblack dentist chair thingy majig and he started setting everything up. I didn't watch the preparation because my eyes were elsewhere...Ahem...He was wearing these nice tight black leather pants and...ooh...sorry...Anyway, he told me to take a deep breath and I squeezed my eyes shut. Wham...it was done! So easy...I had forgotten how little it hurt and I had gotten myself all worked up about it. It's kind of like a sharp pinching sensation as the needle first goes through, followed by this tight, pressure kind of feeling when the jewelry is inserted. He gave me the sheet of after care info and sent me on my way home with my new, very cute, piercing...I decided to get an endless ring w/captured ball this time which, he said, would eliminate the problem of losing my jewelry in the middle of the night. Yes, my eyes watered a bit and Wayne teased me, accusing me of being a wimp and showering me with kleenex...yeesh...
So yeah, the pain wasn't that bad at first, but it was a little bit sore for a few days, but it really hurt if I accidentally turned the ring a bit or bumped it. It would sting pretty bad for a few minutes and I'd have to run to the bathroom for my oh-so-important bottle of saline. I over-cleaned it at first, I hear it's a common mistake, and dried my skin out pretty bad because I was so worried about it getting infected and having to go through the ordeal for the third time. But now it's all healed up and I love it!
I say that if you want a piercing or tattoo, keep in mind that it is a permanant thing and you should really think about it and weigh the pros and cons first, but if you decide you really want it, go for it. Warning: They are worse than Pringles on the addictive scale.
Oh, and I finally talked my mom into letting me pierce my tongue! I plan to submit a story on that as soon as it happens.
