Subject: Explorer Reverse Problem

i have a 1992 ford explorer. When trying to go in reverse there is a long pause and than it finally kicks in. It seems to do worse in the winter than in the summer. Also if the car is warmed up it doesn't take as long. Does this mean i need a new transmission or just need to replace something. Thanks for your help in advance.
