Sounds like it is overcharged and freezing up the evaporator. Another possibility is that the compressor cycling switch is not turning the compressor off at regular intervals as intended. The only way to confirm this is with a set of pressure gauges, but replacing the switch is fairly inexpensive also. This problem is not unheard of. The switch is located on the accumalator, (black Thermos shaped thing up against firewall on passenger side). It is a 2 wire switch and unscrews rather simply. There is a check valve which will prevent refrigerant from escaping if the switch is unscrewed quickly. Hope this helps.
