Yes, you want to make sure it is leaking first. I thought you already mentioned that you were losing coolant and that you weren't leaking it externally.

The foolproof check is to analyze the coolant for traces of combustion. I'm not sure what they look for. Also, you may notice bubbles in the coolant.

Are you sure it is not bluish smoke? That would means rings or valve stem seals.

But, if you are using coolant and there aren't any substantial external leaks, the head gasket is usually the culprit. You may also notice a milky froth on the underside of the oil fill cap caused by coolant getting into the oil....Glen
