Gas MPG standards are I believe set for an engine that is broken in. I have found with the four Accords I have had, that after 20 to 25K miles the mileage increases. In fact, with my 89 Accord, when it hit around 200K it increased again, by the time I got rid of that car at 310K the car was getting around 43 MPG on the highway.

On a side note. I also have a Toyota tacoma V6. With that truck I could only make it 2/3's of the way to my camp in Maine on a half of a tank (filling up prior to leaving and always filling up at the same place up north). When the truck hit around 23K almost instantly, I could go the full way to camp (another hour north of my normal filling spot) on a half tank. The truck is now getting the MPG that was listed when I bought it. Engines need to break in a little, even though they are slightly broken in when you buy them new.
