25.6 mi/gal (what you are getting) is pretty standard for city with some highway travel. On the highway you should be getting around 34 mi/gal.

I think the reason you are seeing the difference is for a couple of basic reasons, all mechanical things aside.

1. your ford had a weight around 1,700 pounds where as the accord is around 3,300 pounds, that is about a 50% increase in mass.

2. your ford had a 1.3 liter engine and your accord should have a 2.2 liter.

Basically, if you were driving a ford of equal weight and engine size, I think you would find that the accord would have better fuel economy. You can not compare an apple to an orange as the saying goes.
