When the air is on, the humidity in the air that is being cooled collects on the coils of the evaporator inside the dash. It then is supposed to drain down and out of the car via a drain tube. Many times this tube can get plugged and so you basically get a smelly odor as mold (?) or something grows on the evaporator coils.

If you look closely under the dash by the passengers feet, you should see the tube, and if you can carefully remove it, see if it is clean, then reinstall it, then try the a/c.

This can happen when the fan is not run for a short time after the a/c is used for a long time on a very humid day. This helps dry out the evaporator.

Hope this helps....glen
