I had the same problem with the key being locked in the ignition- it was worse when the weather was cold. My friend who is a Honda mechanic fixed it very quickly. The problem is in the transmission switches on the driver's side of the gear shift console. Remove the cover and you see a long switch with indicator positions for the various gear positions. Over time, grease collects in this switch mechanism and then it does not work properly.

To remedy the situation, he removed the switch mechanism from the car and took the bottom plate off. There is a little bar with contacts that gets pushed back and forth in the switch case to indicate the gear position and he removed it and used brake cleaning fluid to free up the contacts on this bar. He also cleaned inside the switch case proper.

This switch mechanism sends the signal to the control module that releases the key- it is not likely that the control module is the culprit.

He says this is a very common problem with Hondas of this vintage (mine is a 1990 Accord EX). Hope this helps.
