First begin by checking the hydralic fluid level, if low you may have found your problem. However, by pumping it a few times sometimes before it works properly, it sounds like there is a potential of a leak in the master cylinder, or that the gaskets in the cylinder are worn. Also, you may want to look at the oil (should be 10W40 for the trany). If someone had it replaced and the mechanic used 90W like many vehicles call for, then have it changed and give that a try.
