 Just a guess, but I suspect the 5th gear was damaged, and I believe it is on it's own shaft. So, they may have removed the 5th gear idler, or something else. I believe 5th is accessible under the cover on the end of the tranny.

If 5th is damaged, the shaft bores are probably messed up, and you may be better off swapping transmissions with a used one from a salvage yard.....good luck, glen
