Sounds like the plastic part (in the center of the knob) that slides onto the metal shaft has split/broken.

That happens with age...whe the plastic gets brittle. It wasn't your fault, just bad timing...LOL.

It can't be repaired. You can get a replacement at a Honda dealer parts counter. I bought one for my daughters Accord, with a big order from an online dealer and paid $6, so it will probably cost about $10 at the dealer.
