I'm betting that you are hearing pre-ignition or "spark knock". This is caused when the the air/fuel mixture ignites due to a hot spot in the combustion chamber instead of the spark plug. When the flame front from the two different places hit, you get a knocking noise. This can cause damage in the cylinder. It is more prevalent in high load conditions, like accelerating uphill. Many newer engines have spark knock sensors that "listen" for a certain frequency and retard the ignition timing to eliminate knocking. I'm not sure that your year has a spark knock sensor.

Pre-ignition can be caused by incorrect ignition timing, excessive deposits in the combustion chamber, or low octance fuel. Finally, the incorrect amount of EGR, exhaust gas recirculation, can cause knocking.

I'd verify that the ignition timing is correct and that the EGR system has not been disabled or damaged. Also check if the knocking goes away with higher octane fuel.

Hope this helps...Glen
