To all who have experienced this annoying problem.

Symptoms:
S-light comes on, transmission goes into third and will not automatically shift. Can be shifted manually from 1st to 3rd, but manually shifting into 4th has no effect. Happenes most frequently when warm and humid. The problem goes away most times after driving for a while, but lasts for widely different durations.

Cause (in my case):
Carbon tracking bridging the leads of two capaciors on the Transmission Control Module (TCM) circuit board.

Solution:
I removed the TCM from under the passenger side carpet. This is the module on the right hand side, as there are two - the left hand side contains computer circuitry. You need a deep socket to remove the nuts from the studs in the floorboard.

I then removed the cover and the circuit board from the TCM, and found what looked like a small black dot on the circuit board in the upper right corner as viewed with the connectors on the right side. I found this bit of info on another web site that had a picture of the circuit board with the damaged area circled (I don't recall the site). It looks too innocuous to be the cause, but it my case I scraped off this little spot of carbon and I have not had a problem since.
