In reply to: ShortyBP 's message, "Metallic rattling noise while accelerating" on 07:50:42 09/01/04 Wed

Well... I tried upping the octane and it had zero effect... and finally got the time and money to go to my trusted mechanic.

I can't begin to explain what caused the noise, not only because I know very little about cars, but because I couldn't really make out what my mechanic was saying. He's good, he's honest, but it's hard to understand through the thick Vietnamese accent. :)

So while I can't tell you exactly what caused the noise, I can say what they performed.

The replaced two lower ball joints for my rack and pinion (steering?), and replaced a torn outer CV boot on the right side. $336.12 later, the noise is gone... and I was told if I had waited much longer, I'd be looking at a replacement wheel bearing as well.

So that's what it was... torn CV boot and two ball joints. Not sure which caused the metallic chain-dragging/rattle noise... but it's gone now.
