If you're mechanically inclined and buy a shop manual, it isn't a terribly difficult job. Very time consuming, however. Cost, it depends on whether the head needs to be milled due to any warpage. Best case it is just a head gasket, worse case a rebuilt head. While you're there, you're going to want to replace the valve cover gaskets and if it were me, the valve stem seals.

Good project to learn how to work on cars, but make sure you get a good shop manual before trying it.

First, however, make sure that the head gasket is the problem. Check the coolant for combustion gas - even if it is there, you still might have a cracked head.....glen
