Rod,
I'd check your door switch wiring closely. Do you have 12V at the bulb when you measure the 2 wires, or do you have it from one of the wires to a body ground somewhere?
The way this is wired is that each light has a diode in the lamp holder. The lamp always has +12V to it all the time. However, the negative is not connected until the door switch completes the circuit. The Safety Indicator module "watches" for a ground through this same wire, and turns on the light in the dash.
So, the wiring goes from the fuse to the lamp, through a diode, and then it goes to both the switch and to the indicator module. When the switch closes, the ground is established, and both the diode and the module see ground, and the light turns on.
In your case, there almost has to be a short to ground in the wire leading from the light to the switch or to the module. I'd bet that it may be where is enters or exist the door jamb at the hinge, since that gets move a lot. However, start with the door switch, and work back.
Sure fire test is to remove the switch, disconnect the wires, and check for continuity to ground at the negative wire at the light bulb.
Make sense? So much easier if you could see a schematic!...hope this helps, glen
