Catherine,

Honda makes the best engines in the world!

It is almost definitely the head gasket. A simple test, called a compression test, can verify that the head gasket is the problem. If you do need a head gasket, yes, this is a bad thing. I Just did a head job on my 89 - but I do all my own car work, so it wasn't a major expense. If you have a mechanic do it it will probably cost $800 or more. With 235,000 miles, unless the body and interior are in Prime condition, it may not be worth it.

Once you pull the head off you will want to do a few other things - just beause it makes sense once you are "in there".

- timing belt
- water pump
- recondition the head (valve job)

All of this really won't add too much more to the cost of the job, since most of it will be labor.

Like I said, you are looking at a pretty big bill.

The head gasket itself is only a $50 part!

I've done a TON of work on these cars so feel free to ask me any questions. Good luck.

Dave
