Hi Cameron;

(Sorry for the blank posts. I'm having trouble posting lately.)

They are known to fail intermittently, at first, then evolve to complete failure. Also, when they fail, the A/T computer returns a Fault Code 4, but you obviously won't get this with your 5-speed. It also provides an input to the cruise control, so that will probably not operate properly either.

Have you checked out your 5-speed Accord to see if you indeed have a VSS? I'm not familiar with 5-speeds...only referencing the manual.

The Manual does have a procedure to check the input to the speed sensor. This tests the ground connection and voltages at the connector which connects to the sensor, but it will probably be difficult to troubleshoot until it fails permanently.

When it is in a failure mode, the manual says to check the inputs as follows:
(After disconnecting the connector from the VSS, and looking at the connector with the locking tab up, the terminals from left to right are ORN, YEL, BLK)

1. Check the No. 1 (10A) fuse in the dash fuse box before testing.
2. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
3. Check for continuity between the BLK terminal and ground. You should have continuity.
4. Check voltage between the YEL terminal and ground, with the ignition switch ON. You should have battery voltage.
5. Check voltage between the ORN terminal and ground, with the ignition switch ON. You should have approx 5 volts.

If all this is normal, then the sensor is bad.

Again...I don't know if all this applies to a 5-speed, but hopefully it will help you.

Good luck.

Mike
