Dear EL - here is a copy of a statement I posted a few posts ago:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE for anyone who is going to do an alternator on an accord. The Hyanes and Chilton books tell you that you need to pull the driveshaft on the drivers side in order to remove the alternator. If you look at the car, this appears to be true. In fact, when I did this job on my 87 accord LXI 2 years ago, the guys at the parts store new I was working on an accord the minute I walked in the door with an alternator in one hand and a balljoint in the other. Apparently this scenario is very common. HOWEVER - YOU DO NOT NEED TO PULL THE DRIVESHAFT. I recently did the alternator on my 89 LXI. I got it out through the top by simply removing the air cleaner housing. It took about 15 minutes.

Lesson learned: SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME, EFFORT, AND $$$$ - ignore the damn books and check it out yourself!!
